On the main forum menu, look for the sub-forum about label-making. Lots of good resources there. One of them is www.beerlabelizer.com, which has about a dozen pre-made templates you can plug your brew's info into.

In terms of adhesives, you can buy sheets of labels, or you can find ways to stick them on yourself that'll be easier to get off. I use a 3M spray adhesive for drywall corner bead. It dissolves readily in hot water and OxyClean. Others just brush milk on the back of their labels, or use a child's glue stick.

Sorry to threadjack a bit, but, how do you use the spray adhesive without making a massive mess, @Dirt_McGirt? I've settled on the glue stick approach after milk proved to be too much of a PITA, but even with one of the large-diameter sticks (hardy har harrr), it takes me seven or eight strokes to get the job done (hardier har harrr). I'd love to be able to quickly spray the backs of the labels without crop-dusting my table...

I don't think it's threadjacking, really - it's discussing process.

I just lay out sheets of newspaper underneath and lay the labels face down about a half-inch apart. The adhesive stays tacky for at least 5-10 minutes, so I have time to get a whole bunch sprayed at once and then applied. Makes it quicker. I also go pretty light with the adhesive - it doesn't take much to get it to stick on there. Full-disclosure though - I'm doing this on a junky old desk I don't care about in my basement. If it were my dining room table, I'd never risk it.

I might not always do it that way - just tried it last time because I happened to have a can of adhesive within arm's reach, and I was relatively happy with it, especially when it came time to remove labels from the empties.

My lazy and reasonably economical solution is return address labels. I got some Avery labels that have 60 on a sheet for about 50 cents per sheet. Most of the time 1 sheet gives me enough labels for a 5 gallon batch, along with labels for all 4 sides of both cases. I label them with the recipe name or beer style, brew date, bottling date, and ABV. They soak off pretty easily too and don't leave any residue.

I came across a site a few days ago where you could design your own re-usable labels. http://www.beerclings.com/ They had hundreds of pics you could use, you could make the lettering any color or style. Only problem I had was I couldn't get it to save any designs.

shows hanging labels that fit over the neck of the bottle. It's an option depending on what you're looking to do. If it were me, I'd probably make them shorter so that they easily fit in a six-pack carrier.

No stickum to remove, greater design freedom, easy to produce from a color printer.

I'd also put a code on the cap just on the off chance the hangtag was removed.

I use label paper & beer labelizer through my printer. They've been fine in the fridge & come off pretty easy.

I find the milk trick works wonders!
Put a little milk on a small plate, wet the backside of the paper label, smooth it out w a damp towel.
