Last year was on a Thursday night and this is an all day Saturday thing so hopefully not as bad. I was sitting in the center of the bar last year though as some people left at 5.
I feel like I got there around 6. Line to order at the bar started next to the host booth.

Night Shift yet again selling Year 1 Barrel Society beers to the general public. Am I the only one who feels totally insulted by that?

Here are some quotes from the announcement.

Every beer released will have seen oak for at least four months, will be exclusive to the Night Shift Barrel Society, and will come with a Night-Shift-guarantee of innovation, memorability, and general deliciousness.

Priority to purchase additional bottles of each beer, if the barrels prove more fruitful than expected

Seven different barrel-aged beers from Night Shift Brewing (750 ml corked-and-caged bottles), exclusive to the Night Shift Barrel Society.

None of these things are really true.

Did they offer them to members first? I can see doing this if they're just hanging around and no members are choosing to buy them.

Fairly sure at the end of the first year they offered extras to members. Then offered remaining to the next year's members. And saved a case of each to sell to random people at a markup.

Depends on what you mean by "offered."

During the course of the first year, they offered extras of each allocation to members at $15 each. The extra requests were capped at 1 or 2 for each bottle, except Paradiso, which I believe we were offered up to 4 of, and Knight Weisse, which we were offered none of.

We were often told that even if we requested 2, we might not get that many, because there might not be enough bottles. Our requests were fulfilled (in my case, I got every bottle I ever requested - not sure if anyone ever got shut out), and then I was never again asked if I wanted more of anything, nor told I had the option to purchase anything more.

At the end of the year, there was then a sale to the public. Not to the next year's members - to the public:

At this sale, Knight Weisse was offered. This majorly ground my gears and was my first major issue in an ongoing series of my frustrations with NS, as that was the 1 bottle from year 1 I actually wanted more of (I bought a few others, but that was the one I really wanted).

Remember, this is in January 2014. Year 1 of exclusive beers has literally just ended. Brewery is now selling exclusive beers to the public.

I have no idea what's happened since then, but yeah - I have heard that some barrel society members have been allowed to purchase previous year's bottles. This doesn't bother me in the slightest, that's totally legit.

And, I mean, whatever. I'm being a whiny bitch, I get it. I just feel when you plunk down a lot of money to join a brewery society, especially one where the funds are basically being used to catapult the brewery forward, you deserve a little more respect. They're doing just fine even with having treated their BS members that way, so good for them.

Just an FYI, in the original 2013 FAQ...

Q: Will non-Barrel Society members be able to buy these beers?
A: We’re structuring the Night Shift Barrel Society so that we bottle about as many beers as we have memberships. If we do produce a few additional bottles, we’ll contact Night Shift Barrel Society members about priority purchasing from the taproom. If any bottles remain unclaimed by members after that for a determined period of time (we highly doubt this), the bottles will be sold to the general public.

I don't remember them selling Knight Weisse to general public, but they're covered on this sale at least.

*Edit* You're right.

Sure, that's fine. I'm not saying they did anything that by the letter of what they said was a lie. It was just a little misleading to me, and I wish they had said "hey look we have a bunch of leftover bottles, feel free to come by them before we open it up to public." As for selling Knight Weisse to the public, just click on that instagram post. I believe I commented on it as well.

Totally off the NS subject but I just thought of it. GrandTen distillery is trying to raise money here:

I was over there on Saturday and had a nice little tour and tasting. They give you a tasting of everything they offer for free and recommend cocktails, yada yada, it was a good time and cool to see a local distillery in action. They're tiny to say the least and they still hand fill and label every bottle. I really am pulling for them since I plow through their special reserve gin and would really like that to stick around. And the batch 5 of the South Boston Irish Whiskey was easily their best so far by a long shot. (I say its theirs but it's a blend from Ireland obviously, but they put it together) If we get 50 of us we can get a TB bottling of anything they offer for $40 each ($2000 for 50-60 bottles of anything they offer on the kickstarter thing) and that could be a good time too, who knows, I just want them to do well.

Night Shift is selling Knight Weisse to go to the general public at the 3rd anniversary party.

*head desk*

Would love to hear from robNSB at some point as to why Night Shift was willing to sell these bottles to the general public twice, but never allow barrel society members to purchase extras.

Can any of you guys compare UPPERCASE to Trillium's other DIPAs? I didn't grab bottles, but I am a little curious if I missed our or if it is just as good as Heavy Mettle or their 1st anny DIPA.

BobZ had it last night and he said it was really juicy. I also missed out but I'm sure it'll be coming back (like Vicinity).

I'll be there around 3. Gonna drink all the Brett Grisette.

I tried to accomplish this mission before you got there. Failed. Rye Rye Rocco and 2013 cerise kicked quick though.

Very well handled there today. I love the pre pouring a few of each beer strategy they have going now. Much quicker.

It was very good. Compared to their other beers it was much less hazy (nearly clear), so less estery/fruity - more pure hop flavor. I liked it more than HM and the 1st DIPA but I also didn't care for those beers. Vicinity is their best IMO

Grabbed two bottles of Night and Day from the brewery last week, but they aren't labeled as either the Italian or Beatriz Guatemalan coffee varietes. One has an orange date tag and the other has a white date tag sticker. Does anyone know which is which?

I think white was Italian. kcbaby?

I didn't have Beatriz yet but the Italian roast worked really well with the beer. Huge range of flavor and much bolder than the release a couple months ago.

Made my friend buy some for his party. This stuff is going to fly in the college areas. *Edit* And yeah, the 10% stuff is great.
