I brewed a rye IPA and I'm using a blow off tube for the first time. I have it in my primary bucket with a hose going into a growler with a starsan mix. Checked it and the fermentation is so violent that it is overflowing from the growler with foam and sediment. It is still gurgling. Should I clean out the growler and put new starsan mix in there?

Yes, normal and yes; change it! I also had to empty the blowoff from an active hefeweizen ferment twice. Reading Wyeast's info on the yeast I found a statement that it required ~33% headspace for kraussen!

It also depends on how much head space you leave in your blow off jug. I leave 75-80%. Seems to me the 3638 hefe yeast was the one I used that required that 33% headspace?

I brewed a lambic and filled a 59 gal barrel (with about 55 gal wort). Had a 1.5" blowoff into a 5 gal bucket of starsan. I have NEVER seen such vigorous fermentation. Had to empty the bucket and refill with fresh starsan every 12 hours over about 72 hours. Such vigorous fermentation that the bubbling caused some of the bucket contents to spill onto the floor.

For 5-6 gallon batches, I use 1/2 gallon plastic vodka jugs with a 3/8" Id plastic tube as a blow off. I cut the stem off an old "S" type airlock, & inserted it in one end of the tube. This allows the blow off tube to plug right into the airlock grommet in the FV's lid. I fill the blow off about 1/4 full of sanitizer & set it next to the fermenter.

I am having my first Violent Fermentation, wyeast 1056? I believe (have to check) in a pliney 6 gallon batch. First time I have had to run a blow off tube instead of normal airlock. as in, oh crap, this is not working. taped a bottle to the side of the bucket, and ran a length of tube cut from my rack. star san 68 degrees. I do not have the 33% headroom, but it seems to have finally settled down, (only 4 burps per second now).

And lesson learned. when making a heavier beer with wyeast, get a proper set up... (6 lbs lme, 4 lbs dme 1 lb sugar)
