I had started a wild fermentation and it seemed to be done in the primary and ready to transfer to secondary. I didn't want to contaminate any of my hoses at the time. My primary fermenter was my old mash tun. I flushed the air out of the secondary with a bike pump that uses 16 gram co2 cartridges. One cartridge was enough to completely fill the 3 gallon carboy. I then put the end of the ball valve in the neck of the carboy and opened the valve. As the carboy filled co2 was forced out of the neck of the carboy.
My thoughts are that there is know oxygen available to oxidize the beer. If it works I may use a similar technique every time I transfer after primary.
The lack of a hose was a pita and I don't plan on doing that part again.
Does anyone have thoughts or experience in similar techniques? This particular batch is very experimental and may not yield a definitive result.
