Well last time/first time I made mead used sue bees from Sam's club. The mead turned out great, and cheap for the price. We are about to make a 10 gallon batch this time. Now I will admit its not the most high quality honey, obviously, but it tasted really good, With maybe a slight off flavor.

Now here is the downer, we don't have tons of cash to throw at this mead, and I am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions or varieties that can be used. I will take suggestions from a good low cost honey to a really good quality,( higher cost).

I do realize that raw is the prolly the best, but I am trying to learn mead making and don't want to ruin a batch of anything too expensive. Was just wondering if there was anything not clover that was decently priced.

This Is What I Use

I usually just buy it by the pound though for $3.25, It is cheaper than any of the clover honeys near me and its unfiltered and unpasturized dark redish brown delicous honey. I have used other kinds but personally any mead I have tasted with Wildflower, Tupelo, or Blackberry honey are the best (and in that order too)

I have heard that Dutch Gold is a great honey vendor. You can find their website easy enough. Shipping sucks though. Even with Shipping from PA to CO, I found that if you buy a 42 pound or a 60 pound size it comes out to under $3/pound even after shipping.

That's pretty good, could make a couple of batches. I have heard of them before just never looked at their site.

Anybody from the north Texas area (texoma) or Dallas have any great suggestions? I live Wichita falls and I drive to Dallas at least once a month. And austin at lead twice a year with next month being an austin trip.

have you contacted http://www.texasbeekeepers.org/ ? When I was looking for honey I found my local beekeepers association and found a good reliable source for local honey.

yellow pages or any online phone book directory works good too.

I have a local bee keeper I have been talking too, but haven't look at this site yet. But my local guy sells for $7 per pound. A bit pricy. I am not sure hat average for my area.

I think I am probably paying a premium price for it, but I happen to live 15 minutes from the "recommended" apiary featured on gotmead.com (beefolks.com). Its not cheap but the honey is beyond awesome.

If you can afford it, I'd give it a shot some time. I've used several varieties and all have been insanely good.

I bought a 5 lb bucket of the orange blossom varietal for $260... quite expensive, but I believe in supporting local small businesses so I don't mind it being a bit steep.

I was going to call and see if Goodflow sold direct - located in Austin. Haven't had time yet though to get to Austin. They are in HEB stores and the honey taste pretty good.

Other Texas honey brands (I have not tried all of these honey's but I am still new in mead making so over time I will taste more):
Round Rock Honey, Kelley Honey, Fain's Honey, and Walker Honey Farm

Let me know what u find out.

Also add a few more to list up there. Has any body checked out http://www.millershoney.com/. They have some cheap honey.

Does anyone buy from Miller's Honey and then use the buckets to ferment the mead? It looks like a great way to get a free bucket and cheap honey. In for 1 gallon of orange blossom...

I get a good bit of my honey at GoodFlow's on east Cesar Chavez. Good honey, easy to find and only $28.00 a gallon for wildflower honey. Once in a while they have different types but mostly wildflower. I have used the Round Rock honey before and was not all that impressed with it. It seemed a bit weak with an off after taste for me. When St. Patricks of Austin was still selling to the public, they had awesome honey. I heard they are on line now as just a beer/wine supplies store.
