Best Brown Ale?

Hey all,

Relatively inexperienced brewer here, first batch has been successful thus far and is just about ready to bottle. Was setting my sights on the next project and I've decided I want to brew a brown beer similar to Newcastle. What would your recommendations be as far as brown beer kits go? My local supplier has both True Brew Brown and Nut Brown extract kits (what is the difference between those two?) and some Brewers Best stuff (although their brown isn't in stock) or I could go online as well. Thanks in advance for the responses.

I recently brewed a smooth nut brown ale from midwest supplies and i think turned out / tastes really good. I would highly recommend it. I plan on buying another once I get through the rest of my kits.

Some of my first extract batches were brown ales. Austin Homebrew has a tasty Southern Brown kit; I brewed it twice. They also have a Newcastle clone kit. I haven't brewed that but all the clone kit from them have been very close.

Janet's Brown!!! The recipe is in Brewing Classic Styles (a must have book with great recipes and even more info) or you can buy the kit from morebeer.com.

My 1st batch was a Brewers Best English Brown Ale. If you stick to the kit...it'll turn out great. I wanted to do a larger boil 3.5-4 gal and didn't compensate for the hop utilization and mine was a little more like a northern brown...more hoppy and my OG was 1.055...which is a little above the range they give for it. I fooled a few guys though - they thought it was an all-grain batch.

For me next up is an Irish Stout for St Paddy's Day...and then a Taylor Landlord clone.

I haven't had this one myself but I've heard nothing but good things. If its anything like the real Moose Drool it has to be great.

For every NB kit I've seen, if you click on the "Additional Information" tab, there's a link to the recipe PDF. That has all you need for that beer.

I think northern brewer has a kit called "nukey brown" that should get you pretty close to a newcastle.

NB's Emma's Brown is pretty good too.
