Oh and also, de trappist brewery/monastery of Achel is like 15 minutes away from here. Worth a visit.

I recently bought flights for my girlfriend and I from Toronto to London for the end of June (26th) to early July (4th), and since we'll be there for 8 days and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is only on the 1st and 2nd of July, we'll definitely be looking to take the train to Brussels and spend a few days in Belgium earlier in the week. (Yes, we're flying to London for a Harry Potter play. What of it?) Anyone have any experience making a trip like this or suggestions on where to stay in Belgium? Right now I'm thinking take the train to Brussels on Monday morning and head back to London on either Wednesday evening or sometime on Thursday (obviously I'm leaning towards Thursday to get an extra day in Belgium).

Eurostar is super easy, book in advance to get good deals. Hotels, depends on where you want to stay, but I have always had good luck with Novotel, or any accor hotels for that matter, in Brussels. Some are very close to Brussels Midi, where the Eurostart arrives/departs, some are closer to the city center. Of course airbnb also has some great options.

cheers

Thanks for the info! I had also considered renting a car and staying in Bruges or something of the like rather than right in Brussels; I figured having a car might be helpful if we're spending a few days and we might want to explore other areas instead of stay in Brussels for all 3 days. Maybe spend the first day/night in Brussels and then drive to Bruges or Antwerp or something for the second day/night, then back to Brussels before taking the train back to London? Not sure what is feasible or worth seeing, not just beer-related. I've also thought about trying to work a day in Amsterdam into the trip but that's a lot of traveling in not a lot of time so I'm not sure.

Why not take the train to Antwerpen or Brugge? Antwerpen is less than an hour by train and very easy to do

I'll be posting my rough itinerary/travel plans in about 2 weeks or less, and I'll make sure to tag it to those in this thread that I promised to. I haven't got much done, but I will go at it hard this weekend. I've been slowly compiling the addresses, hours these places are open, and whether they serve food or not.

My research so far has been solely focused on Antwerp, and it's been pretty exciting. Antwerp has a famous zoo (known for their breeding program?), aquarium (big deal for me because I live in the 4th largest city in the US and our aquarium SUCKS), Belgium in a Box, Kulminator, quality bakeries, beautiful old churches, UNESCO world heritage sites, nice coffee shops & restaurants, etc.

Quatz. Sounds like Antwerp is pretty badass place to live. I'm jelly.

It is. And the aquarium and the zoo are like 100 meters from where I work. Let me know if you need additional info on anything!

My homies and I are spending a whole day in Antwerp for sure. Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal looks beautiful from pictures. And it seems like Kulminator and Bierhuiske bars are walking distance from there. I'll PM you any additional questions I have. We should definitely meet up for dinner/drinks/or something besides the trade we had planned.

Almost everything is walking distance in the centre. Bierhuiske is almost next to the cathedral and Kulminator is maybe a 10 minute walk from there? Even the zoo is only a good 20 minutes on foot.

My brother actually has a bar about 20 minutes from Antwerp. 11 taps and a pretty cool bottle selection. If you ever have some time to spend on your trip, I'd be happy to buy you a beer! Brussels will do too ;)

Let's meet at the bar! My friends and I will be devoting an entire day to Antwerp. Send me a PM with details on the name and address.

Quick question: I haven't done much research on the trains. How often do they run?

Trains run 2x an hour. Maybe we can arrange a bottleshare!

There is a bottle of wine that is very difficult to come by in the states (or anywhere outside of france for that matter) that I am always on the hunt for. I found some bottles available for purchase on an Italian site and they will ship anywhere in Europe but not the the US. If anyone would be interested in grabbing some bottles for me and arranging some sort of trade shoot me a PM. Cheers :)

So here's a rough draft of my itinerary. Few things I want to go over real quick.

1. I have a full day on Monday that I don't have anything planned. Happy to take suggestions. Digita7693?
2. Formatting may be a touch off because I copy/pasted this.
3. I edited out most of the bottle shops for now, but will add them back after my vacation. Don't want anyone cleaning them out.
4. I tried to be as helpful as possible by including opening hours, occasional remarks if food is available, and entry fee costs.
5. It's very probable that there are errors. Please feel free to point them out, and I will edit them if this post remains able to be modified.
6. Just because a place is on my list does not mean I have time for it or will visit it. For example, I will not visit the zoo in 20 degree weather.
7. In the same vein, if you have a suggestion or addition, let me know. I intentionally left out some places because they seemed like tourist traps, I didn't have time/ability to visit them, or the place just doesn't interest me. My itinerary is centered around beer, museums, and food because that's what I like.

Special notes:
- Emergency phone number in Belgium is 112 (police, fire, paramedics)
- Brussels is 7 hours ahead of US Central Time zone.
- Opening and closing times for everything is variable depending on the season. Double check by calling ahead, or check websites as they may list closing dates & times.
- The Brussels Card is a great purchase if you plan on visiting a lot of Brussels museums, attractions, and even gets you discounts/free drinks in bars & restaurants.
- I make ZERO representations as to the accuracy of the information listed.
- You may use/add/correct this guide as you please, but I ask that you give me credit under my TalkBeer handle, BusinessSloth, if you post it elsewhere
- The Antwerp train station main entry & main hall are spectacular to view. Do not miss it by going out a side entrance. (Credit to Digita7693 for this tip)
- Big thanks to koplamp, Compton25, Digita7693, Quatz, Stupac2, and all the other people who inspired or contributed to this guide.

NAD1983 I believe you were interested in looking at my itinerary. Here you go.

I added Cantillon to the Brussels list. My apologies for its initial exclusion. It was such an obvious stop for me that it slipped my mind, but then I thought about what their hours are. I'd like to note that beginning January 2016, Cantillon will always be closed on Wednesdays now. Their new hours will be Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Saturday 10AM-5PM.

So you can clean them out?

It's not like people a) don't know where they area already or b) are automatically rushing over there ahead of you because of some list.
For the most part. ;)

I realized this same thing, but I wanted to ensure that I'm able to buy what I was hoping for...which is really just a case of Cuvee St. Gilloise. My favorite Loon behind Viggy & LPK.

Kinda like you said. If someone's really looking, they can find the info easily on Ratebeer. Except the hours. That was the toughest part. I had to Google translate a lot of pages, click around the websites to find it, sometimes even rely on Google-listed hours, etc. I couldn't find any listed hours for De Cam and a few other places.

I'll keep an eye out for your birfmas 11/27/13 goozie.

BusinessSloth one omission I see is "Malt Attacks" in Brussels. Super cool owner I can't remember the name of rn. I brought some CA beers and we had a nice little share. He only had classic, but a rediculous amount of tilquen & de cam

I would pass on In't Spinnekopke. We went a couple of years ago, food was ok, nothing special.

Beer is a scam here, they have a great bottle list, except most everything is currently out of stock. They will push their house beers hard, if you don't order one service goes to hell quickly. Just one beer nerds opinion.

stupac2 Do you remember which Hotel Midi you stayed at? Just googling Hotel Midi Brussels gives me like 8 hotels that are surrounding the Midi station and they all have Midi in the name. Hotel Midi-Zuid?

When you're in Ghent you should definitely see these two (three) things:

Gravensteen: an authentic castle right in the centre of the city.
St-Baafskathedraal: IMO one of the most beautiful buldings in Ghent (and Belgium) and when you're there, go inside and check het Lam Gods, which as an amazing painting by the Van Eyck brothers. Really a must see!

What's the best way to set up an IP trade/ #gopickitupformebro with a Belgian local?
