Hi !

My name is Jon and I'm quite new to the bewing bussiness. I'm having my first batch carbonating pt. and can't wait for the final results in a couple of weeks time. Brewmarts "Mexican style" was the kit... heard it was an easy start.

Anyways, I'm on the lookout for a kit that will match the Chez Staropramen or Pilsner Urquell as close as can be (for a kit) for my secound batch.
Really enjoy the Chez republic beers.

I've been trying to track down Brewmarts "Chez pilsener" with no good luck. Seems to be discontiniued.

Do you folks have any suggestions for light "Chez style" kits?

NB. I figured I'd try at least 50/50 spraymalt light /sugar in my most this time.

Thanks ! ;)
BR. Jon

This would get you pretty close:

If you don't yet have a way to ferment at cold temps, try using a clean ale yeast (like US-05) or a pseudo-lager yeast like WLP810 and see what you think. The flavor won't be quite the same, but I think you'd be pretty happy with the result, and it's much easier!

Thanks for the tip !!

I suppose it can ferment in the bedroom.. I live in Norway, so cold temperatures is pretty easy to achieve at this time of the year, to say the least!

I'll hopefully have this brewing by early January and find this thread and comment on the results after it's finished.. looking forward to that ! :)

Ah, okay, Norway. Well, in that case, if you can maintain a relatively steady 7-10 degrees C during fermentation, you can brew something that tastes really close to what you're after. Let us know what you end up doing!

Conroe,

what about "Weyermann 4 kg Maltekstrakt Bavarian Pilsner" - is this a good option?
My local shop also have most Cooper's stuff in stock as well.. May give the malt extract and hop combo a go in a short time... I'm really eager to, to say the least.. although I'm still waiting to taste my first extract brew.. should be good tho :)

Jeezy and Seven,

Thanks for the tips ! No doubt about checking thouse out as well.. anything that can get me close to the Chez ones.. I'm a nut about these
Take a trip to Prague next holiday and have a good ol Staropramen or Pilsner Urquell right out of the tap - awsome stuff =)

How cold can you get it to ferment at. That's the real key to make a lager. The recipe is easy, the process is what makes it what it is.

If you can ferment under 60F California Lager would be a good yeast choice. If you can get it down below 55F go with the Pilsner Urquell strain.

I have some large Rubbermaid tubs out in my brew shed half full of water. They have been maintaining 50-53F for the last few weeks.

I'm going to brew this one soon http://hopville.com/recipe/398468/bohemian-pilsener-recipes/bopills. I'll harvest some Saflager 34/70 from one of my lagers when I rack to secondary.
