Just brewed my first honey porter and all went well til the og. I followed a recipe from the brew masters bible that called for 6 pounds of extract. It didnt say which kind so I assumed dry. My og should have been around 1.048 but it wound up to be 1.076 after making it 5.5 gallons instead of 5. How long do higher alcohol beers take to ferment? I had no plan for this. Thanks for any help.

What other fermentables went into the recipe? Sugar, crystal malt, honey, etc.?

By itself, 6lbs of dry extract in 5.5gal results in an OG of about 1.048. And about 9.5lbs of dry extract in 5.5gal results in an OG of about 1.076. How did you adjust the recipe from 5 to 5.5 gallons?

Fermentation will last a little longer. The important thing, imo, is to keep the temperature of the wort at the low end of the yeast profile for 3-4 days and then slowly raise the temperature towards the higher end of the yeast profile.

Did you use top off water? If you did, it is very difficult to mix properly so you got some more concentrated wort. Your OG is where is should be, it's a measurement error that got you the higher OG.
