I have a friend that spent the last 8 months in Alaska and is coming back next month. He said to let him know if there was any beer up there that I wanted him to bring back for me. Only problem is I have no idea what they have that I can't get. He said there is a place with a pretty big selection near him so he should be able to get just about anything that is available in the state.

Anybody have any suggestions?

well, if you haven't had the Alaskan smoker porter, add that to the list.

that is all for now.

FYI: my kolsch going right now is modeled after the Alaskan Summer beer :)

My wife and I took our Honeymoon on an inside passage Alaskan cruise. One of our ports of call included a tour of Alaskan Brewery. The samples were as big as the state itself, and I founds some great brews. Their stout was one of the best I've had, and the rest of their offerings are quite good. That would be a good place to start.

Dave:)

Sounds good to me. From looking at their site I was going to get the pale, IPA, and if he can get it the baltic porter and barleywine. From what you are saying sounds like I will add the Stout to the list too.

From Alaskan Brewing:

Get the White, a relatively recent addition to their lineup. The IPA is a nice northwest style brew. The Amber is really popular, but it's less impressive than some of the others. The Smoked Porter is the best of the bunch.

I've heard great things about the smoked porter but I have never had a smoked beer that I have liked. I might have to get one though just to try it.

silver gultch, midnight sun, denali brewery, homer brewery

Never even heard of any of them. Wow, I need to find out how much he can bring back.

Yup. I second midnight sun. Also, for the sake of trying it, get the Alaskan amber. It's technically an alt, but it is a classic sessionable goto for many west coasters. The rest of the Alaskan brewery family of beers falls short. Their special releases like the Baltic and the smoked are amazing. But the ipa and pale are not worth the trouble.

I live in Alaska. I can't say that there is anything that's just totally unique to Alaska. There's the Alaskan Amber of course. It's brewed in Juneau and they have several different beers. I like the regular Alaskan Amber. Their Winter Ale is pretty good and I really like the Summer Ale. I can't say that I am too crazy about their IPA. Honestly, it's been a while since I've bought any Alaskan beer. I usually buy Sam Adams or Rogue beer.

Anything from midnight sun brewing

3rd that. That's the one brewery I recommend you go by if you are in anchorage. You can probably only buy 22's, and their expensive but worth it.
