Looking for a little input on a cellar setup. We recently procured a farmhouse built in 1787. Adjacent to the house is an old, two story spring house.

The spring house is on the left

The first floor stays very cool, about 60 degrees almost all of the time. Currently it houses my lawn equipment and tools. I took my shelving in and have placed my cellar against the back wall. Obviously I need to black out the window, but have others taken a similar route? As the house is very old, the cellar has very low ceilings and crawl spaces where additions have been made over the years. In winter I will probably have to place the beers in the actual cellar.

Where did you move to? I am sure that it's going to be close to freezing in there if it is 60 now. Is it OCR ground? Nice looking place!

It's in Hampton. The biggest problem I have is that the actual cellar clearance is so low that I don't know if it's a viable spot. You're right that it most definitely will have to come in during the winter months.

The house itself has hand hewn log walls where the original structure stood, so my wife doesn't want the beer "in the house".

I'll prob have to suck it up and get a beer fridge to keep out in the garage.

If I had known all of this I would have poked around your property some more when I was dropping off your beer :p

My winter 2014 project, almost complete. Replacing two terribly inefficient coolers with one cool cedar cellar. In my 24x32 shop.

Before:

Exterior, just missing cooling unit:

And the interior. The ceramic heater is installed. Both cooling and heating are run off a dual stage temp controller running to two outlets. Back left is the lambic shelf. Room is lined and shelves are cedar.

That's sexy.

I can't remember if I posted mine yet.

Some cupboards in the back shed. The temp stays between 6c-12c (12c is 53f or something). Perfect for all shapes and sizes. I try to keep it under 100 bottles, so it's a great size for that.

Small bottles and loons. I forget what that is on the bottom left, don't know how that got in there... I think it's a 3f...

Small corks:

Large assorted corks:

Assorted large bottles

Just upgraded my air-conditioned garage storage cellar (too fluctuating) to a proper temperature controlled cooler. Unfortunately I'm 30ish bottles over the total capacity of the cooler, so I guess I'm drinking more…

8 Wired Bumaye... didn't know it made it that far.

While pulling out some bottles tonight I totally found some cricket legs under a bottle of Bigfoot. Also, what I thought was a fine layer of dust is actually some kind of white mold thingy. Totally ashamed and grossed out. Going to have to get myself a little wine fridge soon as this root cellar thing is not working out.

So... finally got around to throwing a few coats of chalkboard paint on the "cellar":

Getting it on was easy... finding something to write with was much harder. Chalkboard paint pens do not come off. So, I finally found a chalk mechanical pencil that works great. Once things get "cooler" around these parts I'll head out to the garage and write my "inventory" on the front (and probably sides). I couldn't bring myself to paint to freezer portion (most of those stickers were on there when I got it).

Edit: The before if anyone is interested:

Nice! Yeah dude, I hear ya' on chalk paint pens...The other month I made the mistake of getting one those and testing it out by writing a big ass letter.

Rapey dungeon or cellar? You decide. The future in-laws gifted us a giant Indian rug so I took that as inspiration to finally arrange my cellar a bit after the move. Eventually I'll finish this basement and get shelves, but labeled cases will do for now. Enjoying a 2013 Fou'Foune now.

Built some simple shelves over the weekend for long-term lambic storage.

You had a previously existing wine cellar?

Just drove my beer cellar out from Denver to SF -- 27 hours door-to-door (including a detour around Utah and a four-hour nap at Donner Summit). It's not much to look at but at least I have it back with me :)

Logging thermometer in the topmost box never got above 62F (rental car had powerful A/C).

What're you doing for a cellar in SF?

Got a climate-controlled locker at City Storage over in Mission Bay for the time being. I'm still hoping to convince our landlord that he should let me turn one of the weird unused spaces in the bottom floor of our building into a cellar, but this will do the trick for now.
