This thread has apparently resulted in several opinions. Allow me to clarify/explain myself. Have had several issues with neighbor in the past. Driven through my front yard, drunken screaming at family, drunken screaming at me, etc. Part of the exacerbation of the issue is that our houses are about 20 ft apart. This results in amplified noises, boat motors, etc. Also, urine will and has killed my once-lush grass in that spot. So apparently it's been taking place for a long time. Probably no malicious intent, but still...

So regarding the loan/LOC: I was shooting for $5k because i wanted to lump our credit cards into one low interest rate. The fence and pay off on the cards would result in lower monthly payment anyway. Maybe that doesn't make sense to some, but it made sense to me. So yes, I could swing a privacy fence on my own after some self-denial on the beer, but don't want to.

I since had a talk with my neighbor (one of many previous), but don't know how much good it'll do in the long run. Probably will have to revisit this again. Thanks for all the replies/advice. I'm a low key guy so I probably won't shoot off his weiner (plus I don't have a scope with that kind of magnification). Until next time, brew on!

How big is this fence? 2-3 k seems steep to me. I just built a 50 ft 6ft high for 400

reread this and i feel like an ass haha
just an honest inquiry.

It's been awhile since I measured it, but if memory is correct I think about 200-250 feet total.

it's not an upgrade. It's not like his pipes burst and he can't take a shower. It's a fence. $2-3k home improvements are exactly what helocs are designed to fund!

How does that point to a "cash flow" problem???!?!

It points to an excess in cash flow!!

Are you suggesting no responsible person would ever consider opening a heloc?!? Why have them then??

+1

Damn big fence haha. Honestly to me combining the cards is something ive done and its alot less stress and i was able to roll in my motorcycle payment and payed it all off faster and cheaper. Good luck on your endeavor, and a CU is going to be a better bet trying to get a personal loan like that.

2-3k is a small amount of money for a homeowner to need to come up with. You should have 1-3% of your homes value just for routine items that come up. You should also have several months worth of expenses stashed away.

Saying you have 2-3k to spend on a hobby but not to do repairs upgrades on your house is silly.

Not everyone has the luxury of having several thousand $$$ sitting around, I was working on building that number for myself up 3 years ago when I was laid off from my job for more than 6-months, then suffered another lay-off a year later. I had just bought my house 7 mo before that so my sitting cash was already low as I put it all on a down payment. Now trying to build the money back up after having to survive on credit cards to keep electricity on is next to impossible. But I'll do it, and I'll be proud when I succeed eventually. But just because I want to build that cushion doesn't mean I can't spend anything on hobbies or vacations for my family. If $2,000 is what is sitting between me having a "cushion" and protecting my family from an irate drunken neighbor exposing himself, I'll do whatever it takes to get that fence and protect my family. Taking a loan is the first reasonable step I would take vs the people here suggesting shooting him with an air soft gun or later stealing radiators for the money.

I own my house outright and am planning on updating the kitchen,,,,, By saving money every month until I have the money I need to do the kitchen. A HELOC for 2k is ridiculous.

Your previous statements make sense now, as it would be easy to say you need X dollar amount if you don't have to make a house payment every month.

No! the key is to live BELOW your means not at your means. Having my house paid off has only changed what I save for retirement not my other savings.

Next time he takes a leak on your lawn, hit him with the garden hose. He wants to act like a stray dog, treat him like a stray dog. Tell him next time, you're calling the cops. You shouldn't have to spend $2,000 to put up a fence just so you don't have to look at your neighbor take a piss.

Besides, you put up a fence, he's just going to piss on your brand new fence! Just make it rot out all the quicker!

I've got a neighbor like that. Crap piled all over his yard, mows his lawn about 4 times a year, and still owes me a few hundred bucks I loaned him to get his water turned back on several years ago. He's always drunk and wants to borrow my tools. How can anyone own a house for 10 years and not have a set of screwdrivers? He's a pain.

I also have a fence, which was worth every penny it cost me. Good fences make good, er, tolerable neighbors.

Have you tried a different bank? Again, I don't advocate financing a fence, but you have options. Shop around. Might get some different fence quotes too...

Put a post in where he pisses. Let him use it a few times then wrap it with electric fence wire. Buy or borrow a fence charger and make sure you have it on high. Did this to one idiot that wouldn't listen to anyone. He has nothing to do with us any more, something about the charger being set to charge 40 miles and brush wacking.

Banks do suck. I just had to fill out a couple forms for my car. They already had my mailing address and other information on file, but I had to do it again. Pricks.

Aside from that, if your neighbor is pissing on your lawn, why don't you piss on his? Swordfight.

Another possibility if you can't finance a fence, is to buy a few posts and boards each paycheck and spend a Saturday or a few evenings putting up fence. If neighbor keeps doing it after you've talked to him, he doesn't deserve sympathy. Security camera and call the police.

I believe the regulators, not the banks, are responsible for this. Bank-hating is popular these days...don't let a few bad eggs ruin the rest.

I prefer to believe the media and blame the banks and mortgage companies for all of life's problems. Seems the finger pointing is more narrow that way.

I got another idea.

Get some cheap, flimsy condoms and start drinking. It's important to drink a lot for this. You need to good pressure. Pee in the condoms. Once you've filled a few boxes worth, well, you'll be drunk enough to figure out the rest. Have fun and report back.

I think the thread title should be "My Neighbor sucks" The reply on this first page was correct, consumer protection laws have effed up lending. Everyday the newspapers say how we need to have more lending to get the economy moving, yet the government has put more restricitions than ever on lending. I work at an bank in policy and each time we get a new reg I have to read through it and determine what it means for us. Trust me it's getting way harder to lend. We would love to lend, it beats having to put the excess cash at the Fed and get 0.05% for it. Just wait, mortgages are next, Dodd Frank is introducing the concept of a Quality Mortgage that will make it almost impossible for bankers to lend to anyone with a credit score under 750 for a mortgage. Fun times all around. If you are set on financing a fence at least you are doing it the best way. A personal loan is the way to go on this, don't do a HELOC. Even if you get one, they are becoming increasingly rare, it means you are putting your entire house on the line for $5K. The best way is to save up and do it yourself to save on labor, but if you can't do that, at least don't risk a repossession in the uncertain future over $5K. Personally I'd call the cops on my neighbor. Public urination is a sex crime where I live, his butt would land on a nice little registry.

I hear ya, just last week I pulled up to a ATM, and inserted my card to get some cash. Those b@stards made me enter my PIN!
