Does this look like something to be concerned about. It's an Imperial IPA that has been fermenting for 3 weeks, this is end of 1 week in secondary.

What's it smell like? I've definitely never had anything like that hanging down into my beer. Could be normal if it otherwise seems good, i.e. good taste and smell.

It's yeast and break material like Union said, no worries. Did you use whirl floc/Irish moss? That'll get things clumping like that. Don't sweat it, you DIPA is fine.

The OP mentioned that this was after 3 weeks in the primary and 1 week in secondary. Can it really still be cold break and yeast?

Yep, mostly yeast, I'd guess. Even if you're really careful, some yeast always gets through and you'll get a little thin layer of trub in secondary. Then something causes that to break up and float, which is what the OPs pics look like to me.

Sorry for any confusion. It was 2 weeks in primary and 1 week in secondary when the pics were taken and yes, I did use whirl floc.

I'd say you're fine, I've seen yeast clump and raft like that, especially when you use whirl floc. Like I said, it really looks like it broke into clumps and floated up. Yeast are strange things, they do strange things. I wouldn't worry. :mug:

Sometimes, when I gaze too long into a fermenting vessel, I start believing that alien beings that have evolved from simple yeasts are controlling humanity from outer space and are patiently preparing our planet for harvest/invasion.

You're not the only one! :ban:

Thanks to all who helped put my fears to rest.
