auto-siphon from primary>keg

what is the best way to auto-siphon from primary>keg...

wanted to know the best way possible without getting the krausen from the top of primary or sludge in the bottom into the keg.

i did a good job of straining out some when poruing into the primary but you know how some still makes its way somehow.

Let the Krausen fall before siphoning. Also, place the bottom of the siphon above the sediment, you may have to hold on to it or fix it in place.

Try cold crashing the night before, this will cause "floaties" to fall to the bottom. As for the bottom sediment just hold the end of the siphon above it.

i grabbed something like this at my LHBS - really awesome in keeping the autosiphon off the bottom without having to hold it the whole time

^^^ The clamp would be awesome. I need to get one of those. Like others, I simply put my siphon all the way down to hit the bottom, then pull it up about a half an inch and hold it in place while starting the siphon. I stand there for 5 min holding, but I like to watch it anyways.

when you said cold crash, do you just put it in the fridge for a day before racking it to keg or secondary?

Yes. I Usually put in a day or two before I keg. Do not do this before racking to a secondary. Cold Crashing causes the yeast to become dormant. Not something you want if you are still fermenting but would want before bottling or kegging due to it making the beer clearer or in this case causing particles to fall to the bottom of your fermenter keeping it away from your siphon.

I prefer this type of racking cane:

Sterile Siphon Starter - For 5 and 6 Gallon Carboys | MoreBeer

Easier to clean and easy to use. Also don't have to hold anything and you can slowly lower the end of the cane closer to the trub as the level lowers.

I didn't buy one when I bought the auto-siphon because I didn't think I'd need it, but after a few batches I decided to pick it up. I'm very glad that I did.

Hang on a second.... Siphoning krausen? How long has this beer been in primary? That dictates, more than just about anything, how to proceed with siphoning.

Agreed. You shouldn't even think about siphoning until you're at least a week out from high krausen. 5-7 days after FG is my rule of thumb.
