Asheville TBers?!

Thanks so much for recs ASUBeer. This is exactly what I was looking for. Only going to be down there for two days and the short hikes/sights in your post pretty much completes my daytime activities. And your comment on end of April has me a little relieved. I saw pics from the Great Smoky Mountains dated today that looked like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie, which had me a little worried about how green it would be next month.

Very excited for this mini-road trip.

If I remember right, late April will look a lot like early spring. Should be gorgeous and still a little cool at night.

Look into Craggy Gardens. There are like 2-4 stops on the parkway in the craggy gardens area. You won’t miss them because they have big parking lots and you’ll see a bunch of cars and hikers. The stop I’m thinking of is like a 1.5 mile hike up and you get a great 360 degree view at the top. The French broad river is on one side.

To drive out to it, hike and drive back is probably 2 hours total. About a 30 min drive out there.

If you like hot sauce, there is a cool shop downtown called Pepper Palace. I really like their hot sauces.

I also like walking around the art area (River Arts District) and then getting a beer at Wedge and sitting outside. There is some really cool local art/glass.

I live in Raleigh, NC. The ASU = Appalachian State University which is where I went to school. It’s in Boone, NC which is a couple hours north of Asheville.

I'll always know who Appalachian State is because of their historic upset of Michigan. They almost beat my alma mater (Penn State) last year too.

Heading to Asheville next month for a bachelor party. Gonna have 8 or 9 dudes and I need to sort out something for dinner Saturday. I'm pretty familiar with Asheville but was looking for a recommendation for somewhere we could get good beers and the kind of food you need after a day of bar hopping. Was hoping for WW brewpub but they don't take reservations and I think the size of our party may make getting seated as a walk-in on a Saturday evening difficult. Any recs appreciated.

I think you'd be surprised about Wicked Weed, especially if you go downstairs to the bar area (more limited menu, but still stuff like burgers etc). The outdoor space there is pretty big (assuming the weather is at all reasonable, and most of it's partially covered with a tarp), and the past few times I've been there's been plenty of space. Other options would probably be Barley's Taproom (basically across the street and a couple of blocks up from the WW Brewpub - one option may be to try WW and then walk over there if there's no room at WW), Asheville Brewing Company (meh beers but good pizza), maybe Jack of the Wood (haven't been there in a while, can't recall how busy it gets). But I'd probably try WW for the beer+bar food combo. Also free pretzels and spicy mustard to snack on. Doing what you're describing at Wicked Weed used to be pretty tough/nearly impossible, but it seems since the ABI buyout (and their luster wearing off as a result) it hasn't been nearly as packed.

Awesome, thank you. I haven't been since the buyout and just assumed it would be totally packed. These guys are a fratty crowd and won't be overly concerned about who owns what. Their menu and space seemed ideal for what we are doing though.

White Labs is an option. Food was great when they opened and has been up and down, but pizza was bomb again last time I was there. Pizzas are 12"(?) so good size to get a few different ones with a group.

The food looks great. Is the beer any good? I remember going to the San Diego location a while back and pretty much everything was terrible.

Beer is so-so. Have had a couple great ipas, last ipa i had was less than fresh. Should have a good lager or two, or some other perfectably drinkable old guy beer.

Agree. Try the WW approach. If it’s packed out you might find something down on the south slope. burial might have salt and smoke still tossing out food, worse case you could drink at Catawba while waiting on a table at Buxton next door. Could resume drinking at burial, greenman, and the funkatorium if still thirsty.
