Hi, new to the forum and Home Brew world. Have done 3 LME batches now and will be moving to All grain soon.

A friend gave me some ingredients for an American Pale Ale but could not give me anymore details on times or amounts to brew from one of his local breweries. If someone knows how to take these ingredients and formulate a recipe in Beer Smith or some other program please let me know if you can help.

According to info I was provided the recipe calls for American Pale Ale Malt, Crystal 40L and Munich malts. Hops are Columbus, Centiennel and Amarillo.

IBUS is around 4.2 and AVB is around 5.6%. Could someone please let me know amounts and times of each ingredient to achieve this if they have time. This is a good APA from what I was told and I would like to try it but too far to drive just to get a pint.
Thanks

1.055

85% Pale ale malt
10% Munich malt
5% C-40

Mash at 152-154.

Enough columbus to hit 42 IBU after the other additions (60)
1/2 oz each centenial and amarillo at (15)
1oz of each centenial and amarillo at (1)

1/2 oz each centenial and amarillo dry hop after fermentation is complete for 3-5 days.

Ferment with wyeast1056, wlp001, us-05. (or other american ale yeast of your choice.) .

You can punch that into an online calculator of your choice. Assume your efficency will be around 65-70 for a first batch.

I was going to suggest a very similar recipe to the one giraffe just posted.

5 gallons
OG: 1.054-1.056
IBU: 42

8-10 lbs pale ale malt
0.75 lbs munich malt
0.75 lbs crystal 40L
Columbus at 60 min. (enough to hit 42 IBUs, based on the AA of your hops - probably ~0.5 oz)
0.5 oz each of centennial and amarillo at 10 min.
0.5 oz each of centennial and amarillo at 0 min.
0.5 oz each of centennial and amarillo dry hopped for 4 days (optional)

How much pale ale malt will depend on the efficiency you get from your system. If this will be your first all grain batch, 9 lbs may be a reasonable amount.

I'm going off memory, but I think this is pretty similar to Jamil Zainasheff's APA recipe in his book.

Perfect folks that was quick. Now how was you able to do that? :D
Guess I'll get there with time. Appreciate the help

Just be aware that there are multiple permutations with the ingredients you provided. The recipes listed above are great but they may or may not taste like the brewery's beer.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind and will probably make slight adjustments with each following batch "assuming I like it to begin with".
