I haven't used it yet, but the "sparks" feature is supposed to help like-minded people fine one another.

No, sparks are a search engine front-end to news.google.com.

Yeah I tried the sparks thing and typed "brewing' and just got a bunch of unrelated news stories.

I already get news alerts via google alerts. I don't really need yet another way to do that.

Invites are no longer needed for G+. It's open to anyone with a Google account.
