Here are some from one of my favorite books, The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien. I'm sure nobody will be stumped by these unless they haven't read the book. In which case, dude, you really need to read the book!

Riddle 1:
What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

Riddle 2:
Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

Riddle 3:
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes out first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Riddle 4:
Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.

Riddle 5:
This thing all things devours;
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats mountain down.

Hmm... okay I'll give this a go
5 riddles said and just how do i sow
The first I believe might be the "sky"
That's probably wrong I'm just giving a try
The second one is it the "wind"?
That's the answer I do send
Number three I can think of two answers
darkness or shadow,
darkness my dog Prancer says is
Number four, must be a "fish"
with scales like chainmaille
or something like this
Riddle #5 I believe the answer is "time"
That's just me dropping my dime
Maybe I need to read the book
But for now it's time for my lunch to cook.
:D

No rhyming and no riddle for now

I started reading this thread from the beginning.. It's over two years old. I don't even know how I answered riddles or came up with them. Lot of really smart folks here. It was fun while it lasted. I doubt I can come up with much more fun riddles. And to be honest, my accuracy at figuring them out is not real good. Cheers Riddlers. You made this place a great thread.

You got all but the first, Mountains was the first. Very nicely done!

I proably am jumping the gun
This one here is for my son
Although he doesn't know this thread
What is your answer, a better question said.

As I was going to St Ives

I met a man with seven wives

Every wife had seven sacks

Every sack had seven cats

Every cat had seven kittens

Kittens, cats, sacks, wives

How many were going to St Ives

Just one, the man on the way to St Ives. The "I" in the riddle.

In response:

Rob and Bob are arch enemies. They decide to have a fight to the death one day when a fairy appears. The fairy says it will give them both one wish. Bob wishes, "I wish for twice whatever Rob asks for."

What can Rob ask for to ensure he wins the fight?

To be beaten half to death.

Sent from somewhere to someone

Ok here is one
Two mothers and two daughters go to a pet store and buy three cats. Each female gets her own cat. How is this possible?

Sent from somewhere to someone

Female one = Mother of a female#2, Grandmother of female #3
Female two = Mother of female 3, daughter of female one
Female three = daughter of female 2

:confused:

That made sense in my head but now I'm thinking it's not right, cause even the Grandma is a daughter of someone, so it would have to be 2 mothers and 3 daughters for my scenario to work....or am I over thinking it?

I don't think I have it right...
But onion rings might cure this plight?

Not right, but I like it anyways! Plus I've had to work late and have had a 100 calorie bag of popcorn and a can of green pees for dinner, so onion rings sound absolutely amazing right now! :rockin: Too tired though, it's strait to bed for me.

It's customary in this thread to put the riddles in bold. Been this way a few years, it's been sold. Helps sometimes distiguish between the riddles and replies. Believe me this is true, and it's no disguise.

When excited I jump
When exhausted I drop
I am held by something I do not touch
what am I?

sorry... was writing this at the same time. hmm......

your belly? provided "works" means exercise and not eating...

EDIT: this is my answer to yours, Dan.

Could there be forces that hold you high?
Not for free they'd certainly charge
Positive or negative in a little sky
Perhaps you could even collide if you were large?
