Does anyone else like the overall concept of this show but HATE the theatrical pro-wrestler vibe it has? I dig the physical challenges and games but the trash talk and howling and crap makes it impossible to watch.

The new or the old show? I'll watch the old ones on ESPN Classic or wherever it is (I used to love it as a kid). It was cool that the Gladiators always seemed to be rooting for the Challengers to do well, it was clearly all in good fun. The mullets :rockin:, too.

Back when the original show was on, I worked on the Universal Studios lot and frequently had occasion to walk by the "Gladiators" soundstage. As often as not, there would be a few of those guys out having a smoke, with their ridiculous costumes and even more ridiculous mullets! Even funnier was seeing them in the commissary, waiting in the cashier line with their tray of food. It was hard not to laugh out loud...seeing as how they were all pretty big dudes, I usually managed to suppress the laughter! :D

Honestly, I sort of like the over the top silliness. It reminds me of a real-life Running Man.

I don't like the athleticism. I think they should randomly pluck out some office drones to go head-to-head.

This is why I like (MXC) Most Extreme Elimination Challenge.

I love MXC, the dub-overs are funny as hell.
I wish they did new ones :(

My wife's going back for her doctorate in the fall. She studies stuff like translation theory (why stuff is translated the way that it is, the inherent biases of the ones doing the translation, fun stuff like that).

I'm trying to convince her to do her dissertation on the translation of Iron Chef and MXC... :D

speaking of MXC, how about ninja warrior or unbeatable banzuke?

Olllllo, I'm all for making the contenders from different social pools, job titles etc each week. I'm just so turned off by theatrical bull. It's like watching machoman savage opening up for a meatloaf concert.

No I totally agree, Bobby. It's like they are cartoon characters. I'm just saying the appeal of the Japanese show is how completely un-athletic they are.

The new gladiators is totally unbearable. You would figure they would tone it down a notch, but they cranked it up. At least the old show took a few years before it looked ridiculous to. Now I can look back with glee and enjoy it. The new show, it looks horrible now, and will most likely never be aired again once its canceled, if it hasn't been already.

I'm just WAITING for the real live Running Man reality show. Both based on the movie and/or the book.
