maybe not what you think.

I know Alton Brown catches a lot of sh*t on here about how his brewing episode (which i don't *think* i've seen.)

but he has at least one redeeming quality, with regards to brewing.

last night i was watchign an episode of good eats about cooking with wine and beer. in that episode he goes down "into his cellar" to explain the gist of how wine and beer are made. in the background, one can clearly see a bench capper, some tubing, 5 gallon buckets, and....

...a bottle of starsan.

My sister in law has met him on a few different occasions (works for a Food Network advertising affiliate), and she says he has the same mannerisms in real life as he does on TV.

I don't care what people say: he's alright in my book.

He's taught me a lot about food and cooking, and in an entertaining way besides. I never sat through his brewing episode. I can imagine there is just WAY too much detail to get into to do an honest job of it, but he covers it ok for mainstream America. At least it may pique their interest enough to get them to find out more.

I have seen his brewing episode (and alot of the others as well) and i watched it right before brewing my first batch and it does a great job of showing you the process and how to do the basic idea. But if I watch it now I find myself almost yelling at the tv because he calls a few things wrong names and does things that I don't think should be done.

It's a great episode, people just have to remember that the episode was made for the general public in mind, not homebrewers who already know what they are doing. Kind of the same way I have a hard time watching scrubs or house or other medical based shows with nurses or doctors, they get mad at misinformation the same way we would with good eats brewing episode

Well said Jolly.

Alton Brown is hilarious. I love the way the show is filmed, and his sense of humor is right up my alley.

He calls flame out hops dry hops, if memory serves... and he wears latex gloves during bottling, as if that were important or helpful.

I've recently watched his episode too and I love the way he explains the process but the one thing that made me think while watching the episode was that he uses ice IN the fermenting bucket. My brew dude at the local brew shop said that's a big no because the ice has some contaminates. Who is in the wrong?

Don't use ice in your beer, ever. Don't even use frosted mugs ;)

ICE?? NEVER!!
One thing a person learns in food service is that ice is food too. If you choose to use ice, you should choose to bool it too. Here comes the conundrum. I won't spell it out for you.
Set up a wort chiller. It can be a big expense, but if you have the right set-up it will last hundreds of batches. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!

Well said. I too watched his episode before brewing my first extract brew. Helped me a lot. I like his shows. My family really loves the fact I watched the jerky episode. Well worth the youtube search.

Alton Brown annoys the hell out of my dad, but I like the guy. He can make just about anything palatable for general public consumption. He's overall a pretty smart guy.

I like AB he's pretty smart however I didn't think he was very smart in leaving his grains in the boil or Jamming all of his equipment into his bucket while he was sanitizing...

I had the opportunity to meet him a in 2005. He was extremely nice. I found a love of cooking because of his show. Has anybody here brewed the recipe he suggests? Never got around to that one.

I love the show and my 6 year old watches it every day instead of cartoons i can't complain he has gotten me into cooking again... My son is always wanting to try something new in the kitchen. we made carmel corn today..

I once asked him in a Food Network web chat if he really brewed or just did it for the show, and if he did brew, what did he like to make. He responded that he preferred all-grain hop bombs. He always struck me as a hop head...
