alpha and beta amylase

Did a quick search and couldn't really come up with an answer.

These enzymes are derived from barley from what I understand? So are these additions putting gluten into gluten free beer?

Sorry for the noob questions but I couldn't find anything that confirmed it.
 
Hi Turboturist, and welcome to the forum.

Although these may be derived from Barley there will be absolutely no gluten in them.
I am a protein biochemist by trade and a lot of my work involves producing and purifying enzymes like these, they are normally expressed in bacteria and purified from there rather than from the barley plant directly.

You can definitely use them without any fear of contamination.

If you want any more info on how these are produced I can write a more expansive post, but it is not really of interest to most people and not relevant to the brewing process.
 
No that's all I needed. Just wanted to confirm I wasn't going to get my wife and son sick using the amylase.
