Hi there,

I brewed a batch of oktoberfest last night, I woke up to check out the action and nothing! I inspect the airlock closer on the fermenter and noticed a crack in the airlock before it gets to the water. Im thinking that oxygen got into the beer all night, would this cause heavy oxidization or by some chance would the gasses from the beer push out the oxygen. Thanks

ps: as soon as i seen the crack i replaced it immediatley and it started bubbling

Don't forget that your beer is creating CO2 which is protecting it from any oxygen...EVEN with the cracked airlock....

The airlock is used to vent the building up CO2, to keep from blowing the lid off...which means simply that if CO2 is trying to get out, nothing can get in...

All is well!

I'm sure it is fine, as soon as it started to produce Co2 there was no oxygen coming in, also through a crack you won't get much if any at all air movement before fermentation starts, it will be just fine.

I think you will be o.k. as you should have a situation of positive pressure inside the fermenter once fermentation begins, with the heavier C02 being produced by your yeasty beasties serving to provide some protection and forcing the lighter air up and out as the pressure builds. So I would just relax and see how everything goes...keep in mind that until fermentation begins, you have a layer of air in your fermenter anyway, so a few hours exposure should certainly not hurt at this early stage.

Hey great, thanks allot! glad I don't have a wasted batch (although i probably would've forced it down lol)

Thanks guys

relax. On one of my first beers the air lock was off several hours. Damn puppy eat most of it I just put some saran wrap over the opening scotch taped three sides and let it vent always keep a couple of spare's on hand now . Beer came out good and nicknamed it Dead Dog ale.:)

i vote all your posts be in haiku format.

i've several cracked airlocks that have not ruined my beer...

I am really feeling low here....Revvy's never haku'd me!

N00bs get advice
it costs nothing it is free.
Revvy Paste Good Cuts!

You do realize that bigkahuna is 4 syllables....it doesn't leave a lot of room for word play....give me time...I'll see what I can manage...

I may have to refer to you as B-K..that's only 2 syllables...

:D

A crack is nothing to worry about, i have had several crack on me and i have never had a problem. I always keep extras around now just in case though. Cause i think i push too hard on them when sanitizing, that or i dont see it in the sink and drop something heavier on it. It happens to me all the time.
