Aeration of the fermenter

That raises a good question. I plan on using medical oxygen to aerate my beers. Is it safe to use medical oxygen without a micron filter? I would assume it would be since it is used medically. What good would it be to give someone oxygen that could have bacteria in it??

I guess I have another question about using O2. What type of tubing do you guys use to deliver the oxygen? Does it still need to be food grade tubing so that there are no off flavors delivered. I didn't know if that would matter when infusing oxygen.

Just use the same tubing that you use for your racking cane and sanitize it before dropping it into the brew. But you wont need a filter, unless it makes you happy to use one. Either way you would be fine.

Is letting the wort drop from the lid to the bottom of the bucket when draining from kettle enough aeration?

Yes if you're :
...doing partial boils with tap water top ups or
...brewing low gravity brews or
...pitching starters.

Yeah, I did the aquarium thing when I was younger. One day I noticed oils floating on the surface of the water, like in a parking lot after it rains, but smaller. Eventually I narrowed it down to the pump (I thought it was the tubing and the filter at first). And yeah, there would be stuff in the air anyways... I guess I haven't trusted the pumps since, and I'm quick to blame them.

I'm gonna try this on a starter... a pump, not an O2 tank.

Now a Days those pumps are magnetically driven, and require no oils.
