Im putting together my first AG set up so all I have now is just a basic 40qt boil kettle, no added thermometer or outlet/spigot. Is there an optimum way to add hops and filter them using this basic setup. As of right now this would just consist of throwing the hops in the boiling wort then using a mesh screen filter in a funnel went transfering to the primary after cooling. Will this suffice or are there items I can add like, using a mesh hop bag during boil, to improve this. THanks for the thoughts.

Your method will work - though I love my hop spider. Super easy and cheap to make and lots of examples on this forum if you search 'hop spider'.

I had a very similar set up for a long time- and unless I was making a beer with a ton of hops, I didn't bother filtering them out at all. They won't harm anything in the fermenter.

You can use hops bags if you want to, of course. Just make sure the hops are loose in the bag, and not packed in tightly, so that the wort can fully contact them. You can use several bags if need be. Or you can strain them out with a sanitized strainer if you want. It really doesn't matter.
