If you are using that to carb up faster, you can actually buy stones specifically for that instead of using an aquarium stone.

It shouldn't have any taste though since fish can be very senstive, I'd try it on one keg (after rinsing and maybe soaking in some hot water) and see what happens.

I'm worried the acidic pH of beer will break down the binding agent and you'll just have sand/glass/silica in the bottom of the keg.

I really don't understand why so many seem to be hell-bent on shaving off a few days of carb-up time at the risk of their beer. There is more taking place right after kegging than just carbing. The beer really benefits from conditioning during this period as well.
Not trying to be controversial or start a debate though.

While the idea of fish poop & beer is particularly unappetizing to me, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I think chemically you are fine. I think sanitization is a BIG deal though, since these things have SO much surface area.

At the very least, push a few gallons of starsan through it under pressure, then let it soak.

Or try boiling it if it will take the heat. (I doubt it will).

Or get an SS carb stone and boil that....then you know you are good.

The acidity of the beer will cause the stone to break down very quickly, you will probably only get 1-2 uses before you see noticable deterioration on the stone. It would also be a nightmare to sanitize the stine after using it. You can boil it but that will also cause it to break down faster.

You want a stainless steel stone if you are going to mame a fast carb lid or system as described in a previous BYO.

To speed carb, shake that bad boy.

If you are hell bent on a stone, why one for each keg? Use the stone lid, then remove and replace with a regular lid.

Clean and sanitize the stone and lid for use in another keg.
