I'm making an IPA with an extract recipe and simcoe hops.

Beginner question: Do I add the hops pellets directly to the wort or in a muslim bag? I've done both...in the bag certainly leaves less solids in the wort...I'm not sure if one method is preferred...

You can do either. I like to just throw them in the boil, but some people use muslin bags. I think that if the bags are loosely packed, it'd be ok to use them but not if the hops are tightly in there. You want good wort movement through the hops, to give the best utilization.

I have a very large grain bag that I use. The thing completely lines the entire inside of my 24qt kettle and when I fold the excess over the sides it almost reaches the bottom. I used it the first time this weekend and it made life a lot easier when I went to strain and poor it into the carboy. Got the idea from a fellow brewer I work with. Worked great!
