I had my first true blow out this week. I brewed a Belgian dubbel, 1.065 OG, fermented with a 3L starter of WY500 Trappist High Gravity. i put about 5.5 g into a 6 g carboy, and naturally used a 1" blow off tube set into a cutoff 2 liter full of water. Good thing I used the tube, because within 5 hours it was exploding out of the carboy and the water in the 2 liter looked like it was boiling!

After about 4 days things died down and I switched to an airlock. I take down the 2 liter and notice a perfect 2 in layer of creamy white yeast at the bottom, with almost no trub! All I had to do to harvest was pour off the dirty water and put the yeast into a jar! Now I have about two 3L starters' worth of nice Belgian yeast. I should make all my beer this way!

nice! there was just a thread the other day with the OP talking about doing the same thing. i can't remember the thread name or what forum it was in, but if you find it you should post your results there along with the OP of that thread. i'd be really interested to know how the harvest turns out. :mug:

Sadly, I did bot catch a pic before harvest. Contamination is possible but unlikely. I had two fingers of pure white yeast at the bottom of the bottle. I think I will make a small starter and see what happens to it
