I've been looking into 5L mini kegs and the one thing I've been wondering is whether I can simply buy a CO2 injector that inserts into the top bung, and avoid the extra cost of the party star tap system. Does anyone know if this is possible? I saw a guy who used one, but the company was in Germany (his videos on youtube are under Dr. Tankenstein).

If you're talking about the kind that use the little cartridges, it'll be enough to push the beer out, but not enough to carbonate it.

Those things are primarily made to be portable CO2 sources to do exactly what you want to do, i.e., take some beer with you and serve it.

Right, so that I'm clear, I still plan to let these 5 liters prime carbonate, and use the cartridges to keep it fresh for longer than a few days. Do you have any links to one? Not the cartridges, but the injector.

I'm not sure I understand. Once beer is carbonated in an enclosed vessel, it will stay that way. You don't have to do anything to keep it fresh.

I am presuming you mean something like this:

Right. Sorry, I figured you knew I meant once you start pouring, that's when it gets oxidized. I'll check this link out. I also found a website called Weekend Brewer that has some affordable dispenser and injector systems. Problem is the cheapest keg they make is 64 oz and runs about $25.

How many injectors do you need? I have a few that I don't use.

As I'm just stepping into this arena of mini-kegs, I would need just one. What kegs do your injectors work with?
