Hey,
I have a 5500w heat stick from brew hardware and I love it, but I am also terrified of it.
After bringing the mash up to temp and shutting it off, I leave it to hang far out of the way so I have no chance of bumping into it.

When I go to put it back in to boil I know that it is cold. But how long does it take the element to be cool to the touch? I realize I could test this out myself, but remember that I am terrified of it :)

Once turned off, I believe the element cools to the temp of the water or wort it is submerged in. Once removed from the kettle it is not hot at all and doesn't pose a danger IME.

The real fear is accidentally powering the element when it is not submerged as it will glow red like a branding iron in seconds.

With proper use, they are rather safe imo.
