Hello, this is my first post.

I have a 1 gallon kit from Austin Homebrew but someone bought me a 5-gallon recipe for their Wheat Stout, which I am very excited about!

I have a couple questions regarding this adventure.

I know I can simply divide my 5-gallon recipe by 5 and theoretically make 5 batches...BUT...
This is an extract recipe and am not sure about adding 1/5 liquid extract with my 1-gallon kit.
Any advice or clarifications for my hopefully simple 1/5 everything for my 1-gallon kit?

Thanks in advance for your help! :mug: I plan on starting this weekend with my friends help.

It will be damn near impossible to pour out 1/5 of your liquid extract. I would zero out a scale with a bowl on it and try to get the extract into the bowl first. Then use a sanitized knife to get exactly the amount you want in the bowl. Then scrape it out of the bowl into your boil kettle.

No chance of getting 1/5 directly from the extract jar/can into your boil kettle directly.

Great, thanks for the advice! So cut it up and divide into 5 separate containers. That will be great for storing too.

Thanks again.

No problem, hope it works out.

If you've never tried to do something like this, expect problems. LME is one of the stickiest things I have ever had to work with. It's like working with tar or pine pitch.

A lot will also stick to the inside of the container, so have some sort of spatula ready to scrape it out.

Or better yet, weigh out 4 single containers (leaving enough or your correct recipe in the can), then use your boil water or some extra tap water to rinse the can into your boil kettle.

Good luck. Not trying to scare you, just to prepare you!

No, I appreciate your straight-talk. If I only get 2-4 bathes from this I will be a very happy man. I asked for a 1-gallon recipe and got a 5-gallon so if I an make more than one batch--bonus!
