This is my 3rd brew and has been fermenting now for 8 days, does this look right, what are the flakes and how much longer should I leave it?

Looks fine. Those specks appear to be hop particles. Perfectly normal. I always have some floaties around that point of fermentation. As far as how long you leave it, it depends. I'm not familiar with the recipe - is it high gravity? What are your plans for this beer? In general, leaving it for another 1-4 weeks is going to work. Again, depends on the kind of beer. From there, secondary (if you use it) or prime and bottle.

Looks good to me. The flakes are yeast rafts and will drop out in time. Looks like your around 1.010?? If so it's probably done. Check it in a few days to see if the gravity readings are stable. If they are it's done.

The instructions says when gravity remains constant below 1020, I think I'll give it til Friday if that's long enough (checking gravity each day) them bottle it, just hope it's ready for xmas

You don't need to check the gravity each day, try one on Wednesday and another on Friday and if it hasn't changed you can bottle.:mug:
