Gah. I was thinking that, except it's "not used before flame out". The most useful time for a refractometer is a pre-boil gravity reading, inherently before flame out

I use mine twice, before the flame is lit, and after the flame is out. I guess it can be used during flame on, but I don't, and that's why I answered the way I did. Sorry, no shenanigans.
