About to make my 1st ever mead, and I'm just wondering about how long should it sit in my primary before being racked over.

without OG and FG, hard to tell when ferment has stopped. depends on the amount of honey per gallon and yeast if your trying to guess.

As far as just racking to get it to clear, I would leave it in primary for a month, then rack into secondary.

Concerning just the basics, when to rack is not very important. It is done to help the mead clear, and also to rack onto fruit or spices. Just do it when you think its a good time and is convenient for you.

it depends a bit on what system your using.
ie if your using a fermentation bucket you would want to rack over to carboy anything after half way and before the finish of fermentation.
