Greetings everyone,

I have completed my first home brew of a golden blonde ale last night. It is only a gallon kit so pretty simple. The kit I used was a Perrys Brewer starter set. It is now fermenting in my basement closet as we speak. I only two issues at the moment.

I am not going to transfer to bottles for secondary fermentation. I don't have bottles and I will not be getting bottles. Here are my questions:

1. Should I keep fermenting in the same jug I have or transfer to a gallon growler that I have?

2. When do I add the primer sugar? The instructions say to add the sugar when you transfer to bottles. Since I am not transferring. Should I just add the sugar now and call it a day?

It says to ferment for 14 days then transfer to bottles with added sugar and ferment again for another 14 days. That's all the questions I have at the moment. The kit was pretty straightforward in general. They do need a troubleshooting manual with the instructions. Any answers would be appreciated.

Cheers!

let is sit for the 10-14 days.

add sugar when ready to put in your growler, I assume that is what you will let it carbonate in?

then let it sit for a few weeks

Yeah I believe that is what I am leaning towards. Not quite sure yet. Thanks for the answers. That is what I was looking for. I am assuming the airlock is required for the second fermentation as well.

basically you only have the one fermentation. a lot of people rack to secondary to clear, but you are good to go from primary to carb after the 14 days. once you add the sugar in whatever growler or bottle you choose, just let it sit for 2-4 weeks. that's the hardest part of homebrewing....the wait

Just keep in mind, if you are set on carbonating in your growler; once you open it (after at least 2 weeks), you will need to drink that beer within a few days as it will lose carbonation fast. With only a gallon, this isn't much of a problem, but after 2 days from initially opening it will be pretty flat. If you can, get a lid for your growler that has a good seal (not just the metal cap that comes with most growlers from a brewery/taproom). That will help hold the carbonation in longer.

Thanks for the tip Seatazz. I don't expect it to be an issue. It's going to be gone in a day anyway I think. Tasting party.

On another note. How long do I need to wait to start seeing activity in my fermentation process. A day or two?
