Last weekend I did my first all grain brew (stove top)..
Started off using my old 6 gallon kettle to heat up 4.5 gallons of mash water for 14lbs of grain. Checked my floating therm after a few minutes and was at 153 (about what I was looking for). After about 45 minutes did an iodine test and it looked good.
Next I heated up 4.5 gallons of sparge water. During this time I filled a pitcher of mash water a couple time and dumped into the top till the runnings were clear. Finally opened up the valve about 1/2 way on my mash and emptied into my new 10 gallon pot.
Here's where it started to get hairy.. It started to smell horrifically of electrical fire so I killed the power to the burners and moved my boil kettle. I am guessing the weight was too much because there was a small flame at the base of the element and it was a bit lower than usual. Refusing to give up on brew day I moved the kettle to the other 2 burners (left side of stove and kept going.
By now my sparge water was up to temp so I dumped it and and after a few minutes it rested at about 170. Let it sit for 10min then emptied it into the boil kettle. This time I watched the elements closely to make sure they didn't bend at all.
Hit boil no problem tossed in my hop on schedule. After 66 minutes of boil still had about 6.5 gallons of wort but I didn't want to boil the hops any longer so I just went to cooling. Once down to 80 I hooked up my auto siphon with a hop bag on the source it. It kept clogging so I just ditched it and went on my way. Got tons of trub in my 6.5 gallon carboy as I filled it to about 5.5 gallons. Missed my target gravity due to boiling too much water but I still estimate about 65% efficiency when considering leftover wort.
Tossed my Nottinghams placed my airlock. Now this is the first time I have used Notty as well as first time primaried in my glass carboy. After a day the krausen was at the airlock so I replaced with a blow off tube. The carboy looked crazy inside with things moving up and down blowing like mad. Today it's slowed down a bit but is very cloudy. Now as mentioned this is my first time using a glass carboy and being able to see inside. Is it normal to look this crazy during ferment?
Either way soon I will have beer and I hope the auto siphon didn't introduce any nasties..
