Going for my first starter next week and I'm a little confused in the starter and if I'll need 1 or 2 packets of yeast?
OG 1.060
safale us-05

Should I pitch 2 packets into 1 liter starter or being dry yeast will 1 packet be enough? Would I be able to just do 2 packets of rehydrated dry yeast without the starter?

I did one packet into a 1.6L starter for 12 gallons and it was fine.

Mr. Malty says 2 11,5g packages and no starter but I got away with it.

Don't make a starter with dry yeast my friend. Just rehydrate with warm sterile water.

General consensus nowadays is if you are shooting for an OG of 1.060 or higher you want to go with two packets. Although I've heard that us-05 can be a pretty agresive yeast, but someone who works more often with us-05 will be able to comment more on that; I don't use it that much

Yeah I'd like to go more towards not having a starter and I have the two packets so I'm thinking just 1 packet per carboy shall do pretty well.
