I hve three cases of flip tops that I am using again after 2 years. Back then I used them with the gaskets supplied and 1 out of 3 was flat after a month...or almost flat. After a 2 year hiatus I am brewing again and using fresh gaskets cuz the old ones dry rotted. Yep, 1 out of three are flat again. I am done with them and sticking to crown caps only...never a flat bottle....

any other folks have this problem? flip tops just not reliable?

No, how much do you want for them?
Where do you live, city & state so I can figure shipping?

Chris

I tried PM you your box is full

well why is this happening to me then? New gaskets, plenty of time, adequate priming amounts....whats the problem?

I use grolsch bottles all the time. I usually bottle half in grolsch for home consumption only and half in brown with crowns for taking and letting family/friends try. I think those rubber gaskets blow compared to the original silicone type rubber of the newer green bottles.

ok so I went to my local lhbs and talked to the owner. He said he thinks I am not leaving them chilled long enough to get the co2 into suspension. Says I need to leave them in the fridge for a few days rather than a few hours to a day. makes sense. Will give it a shot.

I'm calling BS on that one. I drink many a homebrew with an 8 minute chill in ice water or a 30 minute freezer chill. I might be losing a small amount of CO2 but not enough that I can detect. That's with grolsch or crown capped bottles. You might want to revisit your bottling process to make sure you are getting your priming sugar mixed well with your beer.

I second the BS call. NONE of my grolsch bottles are chilled much before I drink them. The act of the CO2 going into solution doesn't rely on temperature as long as you're using the proper amount of priming sugar for the temperature you are conditioning the beer. Force carbonation for example takes less PSI of the CO2 tank at fridge temps but much higher at room temperature. So with bottling you might need as much as 6oz of corn sugar if conditioning at 70* for 3 volumes of CO2 which I just did on my saison. Most of my batches go from 4-5.5oz of corn sugar for priming when done 2.5volumes range at 70*.

You have a problem with seals, cages, or you're getting an inconsistent mix of your priming sugar when bottling.

Are you saying that your beer is fine until it is a month old and then 1 of 3 are flat? Or are 1 of 3 flat every time you have tried them until there are no more?

Perhaps you could provide a bit more detail of your processes and problem?

I had 4 cases of brand new flip top bottles. I had that same problem. Most of them never carbonated. Changed the gaskets and had the same problem on batch #2. I put them up in my attic, started kegging and never looked back.

ok I'll explain my process. 4.5-5 oz of dextrose mixed with 2 cups hot boiled water, mixed with batch of beer...stirred. 12~ or so 1 liter flip top bottles filled and the rest is put into 12oz crown cap bottles. After a month of just sitting there at 77 degrees, beer is put into fridge in the morning or in the freezer maybe 3-4 hours before...

after cold I pop them. Crown cap bottles are fine....cold, carbonated....crisp sharp carbed with a healthy hiss when opened. The flip tops may be the same way or they may barely make a sound when opened, no pop and the carb level is just super low....hardly bubbly at all with no bubbles rising from the sides of the glass

LHBS owner that it looked like I was getting a good seal(i took one of the flat ones to him) said to descrease my head space and chill for longer was the only thing he could think of.....

I changed my gaskets recently...new batch off the shelf, same thing.....

bales are tight, a small kid couldn't open them....

ok so I added a bit og sugar water to each bottle and topped them up. I did notice on some bottles after I re-sealed, I did get some bubbling seepage between the gasket and the white plug/top. I wonder if that is myt problem....maybe a rough seam left from the injection molding....enough to not allow a smooth tight seal.....

I have had the same problem with the flip-tops. Opened the first 1 liter of my latest brew today in front of family friends, its a little embarrassing when you open a flat beer for anyone else but yourself. This is the second batch that i have used the flip-tops, and like you, one out of three carbed and every 22 oz bottle that was capped normally was perfectly carbonated. On this last brew i replaced the gasket, but as today proved, it did nothing. The bails are always tight.

Has anyone "tightened" the bails and had luck correcting this? or what about a double gasket?

When you are flipping the seals tight after bottling are the bottle tops and seals nice and dry?
because you dont want them to be.
Right before you snap them shut give them a blast of your sanitizer to help them seal tight.

I was going to chime in and say that I never have this problem, but the above may be why; all my fliptops are bottled right after a sanitizer dunk using my vinator bottle rinser.
