So I can get a 1.8 cu ft fridge for dirt cheap and I wanna use it to make a larger kegerator, about the size of a regular sized mini fridge. It'll be insulated pretty well and I've already ruled out to cool the kegs beforehand. Has anyone done this before or have any tips?

Be careful with smaller units. I recently built my kegerator, and amongst the issues that I have with it, is the cooling unit from the fridge is too small to effectively cool the space for the kegs which was about 3 times larger than what the cooling system was ever meant to do. What it tends to do is run and does bring the temprature down quite a bit but eventually the refrigerant and the compressor get too warm and it stops cooling around 57 degrees.

If it's the type that uses the freezer shelf as the evaporator then it probably wont work. I've seen a few that have an evaporator/radiator and a fan to blow air over it, you might have better luck with that. I've thought about doing a similar setup for a fermentation chamber and plumbing the cooling system into a car AC evaporator with a small fan to circulate air, just not sure it's worth the effort.

I just don't see it working. I expect the fridge is too small to cool adequately - and by the time you spend $ for materials to build an expanded mini-fridge, won't you be break-even or even money-ahead by buying a full-sized used mini-fridge?

I like my 4.4 cu ft fridges, but even if I could get a decent-size freezer in my basement, I would have gone that route instead.

Yeah I don't think I'm gonna go for the build, as mirth said cost wise it isn't smart and the amount of the time isn't worth it either. Now if only the guy on Craigslist for a kegerator would get back to me...
