    Economy Kettle

Hey guys, Does the quality of kettles used for the hlt, mash tun, and boil kettle matter with an electric system? Typically with a burner you want a thick bottomed kettle to prevent scorching but since I am looking to build a e-Herms, I was thinking that it would be wiser to buy economy...

    weed wacker

Got too close with the weed wacker and took out 3 of my 5 vines that were growing. Two stopped growing after a few feet, while the other three were up to about 15 feet and starting to form cones. Guess which 3 were cut up....Any way to save/repair them?

    Trimming back

Is it ever too late to cut back the number of bines? I have some 2nd year plants growing and I have been putting off cutting the weaker vines. The longest vines are now close to 3 feet. I want to cut off the smaller/thinner ones and just want to verify that there is no such thing as waiting too...

    infection?

This is the first mead I have done. Is it infected? It is two weeks into fermentation. Should I let it keep going, or dump it. I tried to smell it and it burned my nose.. I'm assuming that is the co2.

    pitch white labs yeast

I've been using Wyeast for a while without any issues but I recently decided to try white labs stuff. I can't seem to open the vial without it fizzing up and foam pouring out over the top. I haven't had any issues with infection as far as pitching it but it just concerns me. The directions say...

    keggle boil time

How long does it take to get 5 gallons to a boil in a keggle? I have been waiting for 1 hr 20 min and mine is only up to 150. I'm thinking that the propane burner that I am using sucks.

    Motorized Grain Mill shaft support

Hey guys. I'm having an issue with motorizing my grain mill. I am using a 12" pulley and a 1.5" pulley. I have to use a shaft extension because the 12' pulley pushes against the hopper without it. The issue I am having is that because of the length of the shaft extension and the weight of the...

    oops on original gravity.

So I brewed an Oktoberfest yesterday. The o.g. was supposed to be 1.054 and mine came out to 1.050. For some reason I thought that it was supposed to be 1.064 so I quickly boiled 2 cups of dme and added it. After that I pitched and it had been fermenting vigorously since then. So is there...

Fermentation/Lagering Chamber build by a not so handy man.

Hey all, I watched everyone else building fermentation chambers and was envious. I finally got up enough courage to build myself one. Here is my attempt. I don't have a lot of experience working with power tools or building things so any advice on what I could have done better are welcome...

Fermentation Temperature Help for a noob

Hey all, Do I need to account for heat generated from the fermentation process its self when trying to control the fermentation temperature? For example, the yeast package says to keep it at about 70. So should I be keeping the carboy in a room that is 70, or should I lower the room temp...

    Specific Gravity

I was brewing Craibou Slobber from Northern Brewer and got an OG of 1.049. While cleaning up, my hydrometer fell and broke. It was a standard triple scale one that came with my homebrewing kit. After fermentation, I used a new scientific hydrometer and got a FG of 1.055. I haven't tried it...

    Hello from North Wales, Pa

Hey everyone! Just started with this hobby. I've got one brew under my belt...I've been reading everything I can on here and have already identified numerous mistakes I made (like pitching when wort temp was to high). I'm still waiting to see how the first batch turns out. Hopefully it's...

    Noob starter question

I'm doing a Saison as my first brew and the recipe calls for 6.6lb of malt extract and 1lb of dry malt extract. I want to make a yeast starter for this out of dry malt extract. Do i subtract the amount of malt extract being used for the starter from the 1lb the recipe calls for, or would it be...
