Free-ish brewing books in Central Denver

You overestimate my motivation, MaxStout. I know I threatened to put them in the LFL, but they're still sitting in my office. So applescrap is the winner!

Free-ish brewing books in Central Denver

Alright then. If no one speaks up before tomorrow at noon or so, they go to the Little Free Library.

Free-ish brewing books in Central Denver

My mini brewing library has been gathering dust for 5 years now, and it’s time to send them somewhere where they will get some love. Three rules. You gotta take them all, you gotta come to me (Central Denver during work hours, Park Hill weekends and evenings), and you gotta bring me a six pack...

    What is a Session IPA?

I'd go in a different direction. I've been to enough bars that have three IPAs on tap without a single Pale Ale to believe that they need the gimmick to sell regular old Pale Ale. Another thought. Anchor Liberty used to be considered an IPA. Backcountry Brewing in Frisco, Colorado has an...

American Pale Ale 15 Minute Cascade Pale Ale

As I said above, I took this concept and applied it to a different style- in this case, mild. I am happy to report that it is very tasty. I was worried the hops might overwhelm everything else, but the darker malts still stick out quite nicely. A beer judge might say it has too much in the...

    Wyeast

That's the bad news. The good news is that if it has been in the fridge this whole time, you are more than likely fine. Either way, good advice to make a starter. Depending on the amount of wort you are making and the gravity of the wort, even a factory fresh smack pack might not have enough...

    Double Batch Doppelgangers

You have some interesting ideas, and if you spent an hour looking through Radical Brewing, I bet you could come up with a lot more. One idea that comes to mind from that book: he suggests brewing a basic Hefeweizen but fermenting with Belgian ale yeast. It would be worth a shot. My...

Water Profile for Denver Metro Area

Eldorado Spring water is available at many grocery stores and WalMart, and they provide a water analysis on their website. I am far from a water expert, and I probably assume way too much to really tinker properly. If I am doing an all grain batch, I usually use the EZ Water Spreadsheet, based...

So in theory, if I brew my own, I can pay 2.50 a six pack?

You might, depending on how you quanitfy it, be able to make a six pack for $2.50, but if saving money is your only motivation, I can show you much easier ways to save money. I have cheapskate tendencies, but I would never go so far as spending three + hours on a weekend mashing, sparging...

How many batches have you actually poured?

I had one batch where I was using my sanitized whisk to froth up the wort before pitching yeast, and the whisk fell apart into the wort, apparently exposing it to some nasty stuff that was stuck between the handle and the whisk. Quick sanitize some tongs, fish out the whisk parts, hope for the...

    Hobit's beer style

Given that Hobbits are generally unadventurous and do not go too far from home, it seems improbable that they would have needed to create beers that could survive long-distance shipping. They are also decidedly agricultural and non-industrial, so I don't know if the technology to create...

Breweries filling only "their" growlers, what's up with that?

I have no idea if this is true, but I bet the original law was about fees and licensing. I presume that you need a special license to sell to go beer, and pay a fee for that license. The label (be it etched on the growler or written on the tape covering the label on the growler) is supposed to...

Breweries filling only "their" growlers, what's up with that?

This is getting a bit off of the original OP, but given that the question seems to have been answered... Yes, the growler filling store seems to be a thing in the South- Tennessee has them, and last time I was there I even saw a few grocery stores where you could fill up your growler, or even...

    Malt mix-up - what did I make?

To make dunkelweizen you typically add Munich and maybe some chocolate malt. I would agree with Zachattack that the color might have something to do with the amount of extract that you boiled for 60 minutes- look up late extract addition to see how you might get a lighter color in the future...

American Pale Ale 15 Minute Cascade Pale Ale

I'm prepping for post-kid brewing (we are adopting so it could be a year or more or it could be a few months) and just attempted my first 15 minute boil yesterday. I only do small batches, and am happy to report that you can have a two gallon brew day done (turning on the stove to clean up done)...

    S04 Yeast slow??

First, if it was an extract kit with steeping grains, you likely did not miss your original gravity by 6 points. If you add the right amount of extract to the right amount of water, you will get the right original gravity. It is sometimes kind of tricky to get an accurate OG reading for extract...

    Vienna Malt Hefeweizen

People brew Hefeweizen with 30% Munich all the time, only at that point it becomes Dunkelweizen. 30% Vienna shouldn't be a problem, and will probably create a wonderfully malty fall beer.

Which Saison yeast gives off the most "lemoney" flavor (like Firestone's Opal)?

Firestone Walter uses hallertau blanc as a dry hop, and I have seen that hop described as fruity and floral with lemongrass overtones. Boulevard uses Amarillo, which I suppose would give you citrus flavors as well. Count this as a third vote for Sorachi Ace. (I actually brewed a Sorachi Ace...

Brewing a Belgian Pumpkin beer... Yeast Suggestions?

Wyeast 3711 (French Saison) might be just what you are looking for. It gives spice, it apparently enhances spice added to the boil, and it is dead easy to manage: pitch in the mid 60s, let it rise, and three weeks later you are going to be around 1.002, although the beer will still be silky smooth.

    Looking for a recipe

You can do an American wheat beer very easily- you could use this recipe from this site, the all extract recipe from this article, written by one of the mastersor I bet your local homebrew store sells a simple kit. The recipe linked from this site has you steeping grains, which is very easy, but...
