Aging mead air lock was dry

So i had my mead aging in the secondary for 5 months or so and I haven't checked on it for about 2 weeks since i've been out of town. I checked on it yesturday when i bottled all 6 gallons of it and the air lock was not completly dry but enough to allow air to flow in. I tasted the mead as i...

    Fermenting Lagers warm..what would happen?

I only brew ales because i'm afraid of the "difficulties" of laggering. My fermentation area has an ambient room temp of 74F and the floor is usually 62F during the days and 50Fs at night . I'm figuring that if i decided to make a lager i would have a fermentation temp of 69F and 62F (at night)...

    clarifying/filtering mead

I've had some habiscus, cinemon & dried orange peel mead fermenting for 2 weeks. Everytime i open the bucket it seems clear until i get some out with my wine theif only to find it cloudy. Most of the loose particles, of orange peel zest have settled to the bottom but i'm afraid when i transfer...

First flavored mead any tips welcomed.

I live in Alaska so honey is expensive. I managed to get cheap walmart honey (used it on my first mead ferments good). I don't boild my honey, but use hot water to help it dissolve into the liquid. I have a one year old (kept in the fridge) packet of Lavin D-47. Now I have habiscus about 2 lbs...

Thinking about joining the beer of the month club good or bad idea?

After watching Everybody loves Raymond re-runs and seeing his parents being so annoyed with their fruit of the month club, I wondered is there a beer of the club month? After a quick and easy google search there was, now my issue is with about 3-4 different mail order clubs which one is the...

    Use of Glass carboys

I have a glass carboy yet I like to use plastic buckets. Easier access to my wort if I need to take a temp or gravity reading. You can also use a test tube and store it next to the fermentation vessel, but i'm 100% sure it be easier to spill over a test tube than a bucket. Plus for me cleaning a...

    Why I'm drinking beer

    36. "Beer shows that god loves us and wants us to be happy" -Benjamin Franklin 37. Its the oldest written recipe in the world 38. It makes the people you hate your best friend after 5 or 6 of them. 39. Its how babies are made.

so i had a talk with a brewery about fermentation.i was shocked at what they said

I would disagree, i've used both white labs, wyeas and dry yeast some up to 92f when I couldn't cool my wort down enough. Especially with Wheat strains I have pitched in the 90s then put it in my designated fermentation area and 10 hours later it was at a good mid 70s no off tastes. I think its...

Quick! what should I do?...yeast pouch expansion alert

When you're ready to slap it. You might have to press it against a corner on a table and actually pop it had it puff up in 20 mins. Not sure why some people smack it and takes 3 hours, if you find a nice corner/edge of the table put the inner packet right on the edge and put all your body weight...

Going to West Coast - What beers can't I miss?

If you are in the West Coast you should buy some Alaska Brewing Co. Alaskan Amber and Smoke Porter. I think Alaskan Amber won best beer in the world in 1987 and some other awards. Smoke Porter won a gold medal in something...too lazy to wiki it but yeah great brews from Alaska only sold in west...

Only Thing Worse than Bad Head

I've heard if you wash your bottles with dish soap and don't rinse them out good it will kill the head. I put one drop of dish soap in my bottles and clean them out before bottling and rinse them until no more foam comes out but i've always had good head. No pun intended

LHBS brought down the hammer of noobishness

Probably worse brew store experience ever was the first order i've ever made. I called up not knowing a thing and asked "this is my first brew ever do you have any preference what what would be your best selling lager or beer kit?" The guy in a annoyed voice said "most people buy ale kits lagers...
