Going to be brewing a porter in the next couple of days and want to give it a chocolate flavor. So my question it this, which will give me the beat chocolate flavor, the coco nibs or the coco powder? And which is easier to incorporate into the beer? Will most likely add the chocolate into the...

Fruits and dark beers/Inquiring minds want to know

Going to be brewing another beer here soon. Its going to be a porter with fruit in it, most likely strawberries. I've been told that if I boil the strawberries that will set the pectin and make the beer cloudy but, as this is going to be a porter, and be dark to begin with, is that something I...

    What does it do

Being still new to the craft I've been watching lots of youtube vids on brewing. One thing I see a lot is people adding air/O2 to the beer when its in the fermenter. So, what exactly does this do? Cause I thought oxygen was bad for the beer. Can anyone explain this to me? Thx

    A Follow Up Question

This follow up question goes along with my post "it's got a funky smell". That batch I brewed is still in the fermenter and still has that band aid smell. And, after reading some replies to that I think I may have under pitched the yeast. I used US-05. You can view the recipe in my post High OG...

Its got a funky smell to it

Sunday I brewed a new batch, a porter with some strawberries in it. You can view the recipe in my post titled, High OG, and this batch has a funky smell to it. Its kinda hard to describe. It's almost like it smells like the plastic from the fermenter, which I bought new and cleaned with PBW and...

    High OG

Just put my third batch in the fermenter and the OG seems a bit high. It measured 1.094. Seems a bit high but, I think it might be because there's a lot of sugar. Besides the extract, lme and grains there is a pound and a half of strawberries cooked down with some some sugar. Hope I didn't over...

    What's the purpose?

Being the newby that I am, I have a questions about racking to a secondary. What is the purpose of it? What exactly does it do? Is it always necessary? I've only done two brews at this point and didn't have to do this to either. Just trying to learn as much as I can about this new hobby that...

    forgot to take an OG

So, got my second batch of beer in the fermenter, been in there over a week now, and I forgot to take an OG. When it's done and I go to bottle, will taking a FG give me a close ABV? Or, can I take a gravity reading now and use that as my OG? This batch is going to be fermenting for about another...

My First brew and its a Gusher

The first beer I've ever brewed is completely finished and the two bottles I've opened have had foam gushers. What could be the cause of this. I sanitized my bottles so I'm sure they're clean. Anything anyone can offer would be helpful in figuring out how to prevent this for the next batch...

carbonation/ inquiring minds want to know

Which sugar is best to use for carbonation? I used table sugar for my first brew, which is in the bottle, but, have been told that dextrose is better. Is dextrose the best to use, or is there something better. Or, will table sugar do the job? Or, is there another sugar that will work better?

Well, my first attempt at beer making and it taste like flat beer. That's a good thing, right? I acctually didn't think it would turn out. So now I'm getting ready to carbonate. Will keep the forum updated on its progress.
