    RIMS mash efficiency issues

I just recently switched to an electric system. I have a 5500W/240V element in my kettle and a 1650W/120V element in a RIMS tube. I recirculate through the RIMS tube the entire 60 min mash duration and have the return through a silicone hose running into the mash tun right around the top of the...

    Electric ventilation

I just went through my first electric brew session, still brewing in the garage, and I need to come up with ventilation solution for all the steam. I've searched through some threads but wondering what success people have had with cheap range hoods that are near 400 CFM? I see some online for...

    Controller for RIMS & Boil?

I've been doing some searching and am interested in the idea of possibly getting into a RIMS setup and also converting my boil kettle to electric. However, I don't see any prebuilt controllers available that have the ability to run both the RIMS element and a boil kettle element. This will allow...

Heavy foaming from highly carbonated beers

When I brew Belgian beers and carbonate them highly, I can't get a good pour out of my keezer. I have the Intertap stainless faucets, have my keezer temp set at 35 degrees and about 9 feet of beer line. I have to set the PSI to about 20-22 PSI to get what I think is a proper carbonation. Am I...

    NHC Competition Results

Entered two beers into NHC for the first time this year. Just wondering what the typical turn around time is to receive the scores and results? I entered in Philadelphia which is being judged this coming weekend. Are the results held until all the regions go through judging or released...

20g Spike Kettle for 6g batches

So I've read through a bunch of the other threads on this topic but want to get some additional thoughts if possible. I'm considering buying a 20g Spike boil kettle. I typically do 6g batches into the fermenter which require a bit over 8g boils. I wouldn't mind having the ability to do a 10-12g...

    SMaSH IPA or single hop

Just wanted to get some current thoughts on whether people feel it's worth brewing a true SMaSH IPA or a more traditional IPA grain bill with just a single hop. I'm planning on brewing a single hop IPA with Simcoe next weekend. Considering brewing a true SMaSH with Maris Otter / Simcoe but...

IPA recipe troubleshooting? Old hops to blame?

So I recently brewed what I was hoping to be a traditional American IPA. I had previously brewed a Rye IPA with a similar recipe and hop schedule that I thought came out well and received a respectable score in a competition of a 34. The comments for this American IPA (same as rye but...

SS Brewtech Brew Bucket Racking Arm Modification

When pulling a sample of a saison that is near the end of fermentation, the racking arm was positioned within the level of the trub/yeast that has flocculated at this point. When opening the valve, there was a slight hesitation before some yeast came out. It made me wonder if anyone has used a...

5 lb CO2 tank empties too fast

I have a spare 5 lb tank that I bought used along with a Kegco single output regulator. The tank looks to be in great shape and relatively new. I don't use this tank to serve kegs in the keezer as I have a 20 lb tank which has lasted almost a year now and counting. This 20 lb tank has...

Wyeast 3944 and awful smell in witbier

i just took my first taste after kegging and carbonating a Wit that I brewed using wyeast 3944. Everything I’ve read mentioned an awful smell during fermentation which I did experience. However it seems to have carried into the packaged beer and it’s completely terrible. I fermented in the mid...

    First wit recipe mash question

Question is around whether or not a protein rest is required or recommended when using flaked wheat in a Wit. The grain bill is below: 5 lb Pilsner 3 lb flaked wheat 2 lb Red wheat .5 lb carapils .5 lb flaked oats

    Efficiency drop since using pump?

Last two batches my efficiency has suffered and I’ve missed my OG by about .010. The main difference is I’ve started using a chugged pump to vorlauf. I batch sparge. I can’t imagine the pump would be the reason for the drop but I’m not doing anything else differently. Any thoughts?

Carbonation impacted by temp diff in keezer?

I just finally installed a computer fan in my keezer when I realized that the temperature near the top of the keezer was up near or above 50 degrees. I have the temp controller set to 37 and the probe zip tied to a soda can sitting on the hump of the keezer. Anyway, I've felt that my beers...

Wyeast 3522 Belgian Ardennes + Fusels

Question: Has anyone had a similar experience with fusel alcohol flavors coming through even through temp control was set in the mid 60's? I think my issue was pitching the yeast at too high a temp due to very long time chilling wort after the boil. See process below: I just kegged my...

    New England road trip

My wife and I are looking to plan a short road trip up through New England from PA. Only planning on stopping in Newport, RI, Boston, MA and Portland, ME. Would like to stop at Trillium and Maine Beer Co at a minimum. Anyone have advice on must visit breweries? We will likely only be able to...

    Temp control - Fermonster

First time fermenting in a mini-fridge I converted. I have a strip thermometer on the front of a Fermonster as well as an Inkbird temp probe taped to the side. I have a small watt space heater to heat the chamber as needed and the minifridge will cycle on to cool. The issue I have is when I...

    CO2 leak in keezer?

I put together a keezer with a 10.2 Cu Ft chest freezer and kegged my first brew. Bought a new ball lock and 20 lb CO2 tank. I've noticed the CO2 burn ever time I open the keezer and have checked the connections several times with star san in a spray bottle. I haven't noticed any bubbling at any...
