    Upgrading a basic kit

Thanks for all the comments. Think I'm going to go for a separate mash tun for now. Planning on using a single electric boiler to provide initial water and sparge water and then use the same boiler for the boil.

    Upgrading a basic kit

I've been brewing for a few years now and have primarily brewed partial extract and mini mash recipies. Wanting to brew some larger all grain batches and therefore need to upgrade my kit. I am torn between buying an electric water boiler for heating water and the boil and a cooler to act as a...

    How to reduce sludge

I have been brewing beer using extract kits for a number of years and started to make small batches of all grain using a simple set up with a stock pot, grain bag (brew in the bag) and adding hops via a small bag. Results are good but always end up with a huge amount of sludge in the fementer...

    No time to bottle

I have a fermented cider cold crashing and was hoping to bottle before I go on holiday for a week but it has not dropped all of the yeast cake to the bottom yet. Will it be ok at 2 degrees for a week until I get back or should I bottle now? Going on holiday tomorrow morning so would really...

What should I use to top-up my demijohn for Plum wine?

Sanitised glass marbles works well if you don't want to mess with the wine or add some cheap commercial wine.

Cider flavor additives - Primary vs. Secondary? (Lemongrass, hops, etc.)

Sorry forgot to add. 23 Litres. Not sure what that is in US gallons, probably around 6?

Cider flavor additives - Primary vs. Secondary? (Lemongrass, hops, etc.)

I always bottle condition my cider and sometimes it can be a little dry and I find that dry hopping somehow gives the effect of a less dry cider (as well as providing that hoppy character) I typically use around 100g of cascade, citra or mosaic or a mixture and the results are typically awesome!!

    Wine bottle labels

I am planning on giving some of my homemade wine away as Christmas presents and would like to design some labels for the different wines. Does anyone know any good websites? Thanks

    wine color

I've had this issue after stabilising fruit wines. Typically you get a wonderful colour which is always ruined when you add stabiliser!!

    Degassing? When? Why?

You've answered your own question. If you leave for 6 months there is very little chance of carbonation after bottling (unless you are backsweeting without killing of the yeast of course).

Where to buy decent honey in bulk?

Best I can do on eBay is approx £4.50 per lb which is too much for me. I have a couple of requests for quotes with local bee keepers but I suspect it will be similar price.

Where to buy decent honey in bulk?

I've previously made 1-2 gallon batches of mead with cheap honey. Would be keen to make a 5 gallon batch with some decent honey. Anyone know where you can get 10 kg of good honey in the UK without breaking the bank? Thanks in advance.

    Over Thinking

What's the volume of fruit juice you add?

    Elderberry wine

Make wine but just add in some red grape juice or concentrate to give it extra body and I find it mellows out quicker. Would still give a min of 2 years in the bottle though!

    Heaters - belts or pads?

Thanks barnardsmith, I agree with you 100% but at the moment I'm trying to reduce the interest in my springer spaniel!!

    Heaters - belts or pads?

Thought I would show the new set up thanks for the advice. Note - fully understand that it's not great to have so much water next to a plug socket, it's temporary!! Thanks

Help me decide which hops to use do dry hop my cider

I ended up using 50g of challenger in one 1gallon demijohn and 50g of styrian goldings in the other. Think I be probably overdone it!!

Help me decide which hops to use do dry hop my cider

I have 10 litres fermenting now and typically use 30g for dry hopping per 5 litres. Cascade and centennial work well in combination. Anyone use more/less hops?
