    harvested yeast question (brewing today)

I took this yeast from the carboy on the 11th of March. I swirled the yeast cake with some boiled and cooled water and dumped into sanitized jar, and put it in the fridge. I did not do any other rinsing of the yeast. It is WLP 007 Dry English. I was planning on making a small starter to get...

    help with brew math

I am trying to figure out how much I volume I need to boil off to hit my desired OG. I believe the formula is (preboil gravity x preboil volume) / desired gravity = boil off volume if I have 6.5 gallons @ 1.056 and I want an OG of 1.060 do I? (1.056x6.5) / 1.06= 6.475 6.5-6.475=0.025...

    pH of sparge runoff?

I got some of those ph test strips because I read you should stop your run off of wort if the ph gets to 6.0 or above. I checked the mash ph and it was around 5 (as best as I could tell) At the end of the runoff the ph went down not up. Why?

    Fly Sparge adjustment questions

I am gong to do another fly sparge and am trying to figure this out. If I have 10 lbs of grain and mash @ 1.25 quarts per lb that's 3.125 gallons for the mash I've read that you can estimate sparge volume at twice the mash volume so that's 6.25 gallons of sparge water I've also read you...

I know it's too soon but..

I had to try it. After a week in the bottle I couldn't resist having a taste of my first all grain brew. The beer definitely needs more time to condition but it tasted pretty good considering. I noticed a slight green apple flavor, but I assume that will go away after a few weeks. The main...

Manifold not laying on bottom of mash tun ?

I found some CPVC pipe and fittings while cleaning out the garage and I thought I'd convert my old bottling bucket into a mash tun. Does the manifold have to lay directly on the bottom of the bucket? If it's off the bottom an inch or two will it greatly effect the amount of wort I can run off...

    Idea for sparging.

I haven't done any all grain or even a mini mash yet but I've been thinking about it and had an idea. If you drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the cooler lid and then drilled a larger hole in the top to accept a hose. Kind of use the lid as a sprinkler head to sparge?
