    Favorite Northern Brewer recipe kits

Hey guys, I have brewed a couple northern brewer recipe kits and have liked them so far. I like the milk chocolate stout kit and the Dead Ringer IPA. Both were excellent. The Dead Ringer is well balanced and not too hoppy for an IPA...I just love the hop flavor. The milk stout kit is tasty...

    pyrex flask and electric stove

Does anyone know how to use a pyrex flask with an electric stove? Are there any ceramic diffusers to put over the element to protect the flask? Has anyone had any luck just setting it right on the element? What about lab hot plates or hot plates from walmart?

    14# pumkin ale?

I brewed a pumpkin ale with 8 cans of libbys pure pumpkin (14#) :ban:. Its been 2 weeks since brewday and I cannot taste any pumpkin in my beer which is currently in the secondary. Has anyone else had this issue? I thought that using such a large amount of pumpkin would impart more flavor, but I...

    E-HERMS coils installation question

I am building my E-HERMS brewery and a thought just came to me: Do I want to permanently install my herms coil in my HLT or make it removable? (I have already decided I am not using compression fittings as I have had a very difficult time getting them on a bent copper tube.) For all...

Can Dark LME impart extra roasty flavors in a stout??

I am not an extract brewer....but for one of my first brews I made an imperial chocolate stout. It ended up being a partial mash because about 1/3 of the sugar came from extract. But anyway...the recipe I was using called for Light LME and I ended up using Dark LME. The brew ended up being extra...

Making an ordinary bitter...but how to get enough wort???

Okay so my grain bill for my ordinary bitter recipe for tomorrow is 7 pounds. From what I have read I should make a thick mash (1qt/#grain) for this style. If I follow that mashing schedule and the 1/2 gallon per pound of grain guideline for sparging, I will have under 5 gallons of preboil wort...

Bang carboy for better dry hop aroma?

I noticed that when one dry hops with pellet hops, most of the hops reside on top of the beer in the carboy. I figured the final product would have a better aroma if I could submerge the hops in the beer instead of having them float on top...thus I would gently hit the side of the carboy which...

Homebrew concoctions vs. brewing to style

How many of you guys brew your own concoctions vs. trying to brew to a specific style. By that I mean just adding different malts to you grain bill and then classifying it when its done. If you have made an awesome home brew concoction, I would love to hear about it!:mug:

    Homebrew contests

I just recently entered my old ale into a home brew competition. It was my second beer ever, and my first contest ever, thus I have no idea what a good score is. It scored a 31-32 average, and I didn't place in the top three in my flight. Is this score below avg, avg, above avg? I am just...

    Bananas?

Hey guys...If I were to make a banana beer and wanted to use real banana, could I just add whole banana to the secondary or primary at high krausen without sanitizing? Shouldn't they be sanitary already if they come right from the peel?

    Too much trub in primary!

Hey guys...I just got done brewing a porter. After I chilled my wort I took a sanitized spoon and swirled the wort around to center the trub in the middle of my brew pot. Unfortunately, I didn't wait long enough for all the trub to settle...and realized this after I was half way through...
