    Who loves winter holiday beers?

I love winter seasonals, do you? Which ones? O’Dell isolation ale- dark, malty, slightly sweet, quaffable, delish. Avery Old Jubilation, English Strong- classic, complex, so malty and delicious. Left Hand Fade to Black, dark rye ale, so many flavors, contemplative. Great Divide Hibernation Ale...

    Brews of Joy documentary

Watched this on Amazon prime, highly recommend it. I am not a noob when it comes to brewing, but I am far from expert. When the show gets into what it takes to become a master cicerone, I was amazed. It seems that you have to be virtually expert in every aspect of beer. Respect.

Hot Rod heat stick performance example

So I got a 1,650 + a 2,200 watt Hot Rod. Tested them this weekend. 8 gallons from 60 to 160 degrees in 30 min, then to a boil an additional 30 (I am at 1 mi. High). I then added 5 gal more, to simulate a 10g batch, also got to boiling in 30. The boil was mellow, I later read maybe I should...

    Damascus Steel Opener!!!

I have been wanting one, but finally found a reasonably priced Damascus Steel Bottle Opener, on Amazon of all places. I am not marketing or advocating this product, but am happy to add this to my collection. Zoom in to see the beauty of this thing. Now, I want to find a reasonably priced, hand...

Girl Scout cookie moms can be mentally ill

I had no idea before my daughter got involved with this stuff how much bs it could entail. First, moms arguing over how the troop bought too many cookies, how it didn't buy enough cookies...arguing over which cookies the troop got too many of, which they didn't get enough of... Now, my...

Stupid errors result in sweet FG for HG brew

So, I did a Utopias clone. Pitched a massive amount of initial yeast, had a very vigorous fermentation. Added candi sugar and maple syrup to a high gravity wort (but didn't add additional yeast with the sugar, duh). Oxygenated, but didn't do a 2nd (or 3rd) oxygenation. In hindsight, made lots of...

Any Boxers / MMA / Martial Arts folks?

My son is really enjoying his Tae kwan do classes. He is 9, been doing it for a year. I like the idea of him using a "heavy bag" (60 lbs. or so) to build his strength and coordination. I am also thinking of getting a 100 lb. for myself, but have never used one. Any recommendations, comments...

I saw this on Etsy, $150!!! Edit: $200. The "cheap" one was $150. Damascus steel, hand forged, I cannot fathom a better tool to open my crafted beers with. Someday. :tank:

Bourbon Barrel Cherry Quad with Zin?

I made this recipe for the 2nd time, with the cherries, bourbon, and oak, it came out awesome and aged even better. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=356669 This time, I did 10G, so I am thinking of doing 1/2 with oak chips soaked in a Red Zinfandel I have been ageing. Has anyone...

Pass the drink, I wanna get healthy

An interesting article on how even more than 2-3 drinks a day is healthier than abstinence: http://www.psmag.com/health-and-behavior/truth-wont-admit-drinking-healthy-87891 I think it's hard to maintain healthy weight if you're drinking that much, but if you do / can, you're still likely...

Who LOVES Winter Warmers / Holiday Ales?

I just adore this time of year, and am a tremendous fan of Winter Warmers / Holiday ales. :ban: I don't enjoy the over commercialization where Christmas (or rather, XMAS) starts at Halloween, I hate Black Friday (though there were some awesome brew equipment deals on the net). I love...

Wow, now that's a lot of drinking

Somtimes life gives you lemons that turn to beer

I was in a crappy mood. I had to be in a pointless 5 1/2 hr. meeting at corporate in LA, that I could easily have done by phone conference, but I needed to "support the team" not to mention keep the boss happy. Flew from DEN to LA last night, arrived late, 11 hr. day. Had an OK meeting, we...

I CANNOT believe what I just drank- wow

At an awesome bar in Toronto, they just happened to have this on the menu. Upside Utopias, one of the most transcendent beers I have ever had. Besides the hype, it is incredible. I think the secret is very very dark candi sugar. I can't wait to do another clone, mine before have been very...
