    Question on APA recipe

I've been looking at a few American Pale Ale recipes on here, and it seems the majority of them use 1lb of vienna or munich malt for ~5 gallons. Just curious to what the vienna/munich malt adds to the beer. Or maybe this is just what you do according to the style? Thx.

I am in a situation where my base malt is only pilsner, pale malt(2 row) doesn't exist here. I am just curious how much it will change a recipe if I use pilsner malt instead of what the original recipe called for. thx.

German Ales tend to be darker because they are fermented at lower temperatures. Ok, just thought I would share this... I recently download BeerTrivia for my iPhone and this is what it told me. Excuse my ignorance if some how fermenting at lower temperatures makes an ale darker!

question about lenght of heating element

I purchased a 5,500W low density and a 4,500W low density from Lowes a while back. The 4,500W is 2x as long as the 5,500W (which is actually really short). Am I still going to get 5,500W out of it? I guess it has more power to surface area, but just wanted to be sure.
