    Floaty thermometers suck

I typically brew 10 gallon batches, but started to do 5 gallon batches for the first time. The water just barely gets to the thermometer connected to my 15.5 gallon pot, so I used a floating thermometer for the strike and mash tester. Well after my second batch i realized the floating...

    Heat distribution problem

Anyone ever have issues with uneven heating of the mash using a RIMS/HERMS system? I heat the mash tun and run the circulating wort through a copper line in the HWT. It dumps right into the mash, but I have to stir to distribute the heat. My homebrew store recommended throwing a half pound of...

    Recirculating Problems

I updated my brew system recently for recirculation. I have been having a few issues and was wondering if anyone has any advice. First, I use a tiered setup with all stainless steel pots. I added a pump to push the mash up into a copper coil located in the HWT, which feeds back into the mash...

    Keg carbing with priming sigsr

I have a friend who is getting married in a couple of months. He wants to bring a few kegs to the wedding. I won't be able to force carbonate in my fridge like I usually do, and I am debating adding sugar or just putting 30 psi and leaving in my basement. Unfortunately i won't be able to...

    Insulating jacket for stainless kettle

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with insulating their stainless pots? I use a 15 gallon stainless pot for my mash and tried some if this bubble wrap insulation from Home Depot. It melted up to about 6 inches from the bottom of the pot. I thought of cutting PVC in half and shielding...

    HERMS Build

I attached a photo of the HERMs system I just built. I tried to wrap the 15 gallon kettles with wrap insulation. Unfortunately the bottom 2 to 3 inches burned away. Anyone know of better insulation for this use? Also, I have to maintain the HWT about 4 degrees warmer than the mash temp to...

    Grain motor

There are a lot of posts regarding grain motor sizes. It seems the consensus is that a 1/4 HP, 1720 rpm motor will do the job (geared down by a ratio of around 8). This pulls the rpms down to around 215 and pushes up the torque to about 73 in-pounds (assuming no energy loss) 1/4 HP =...

    Fermentation Chamber Pros and Cons

I have been looking through many forums regarding fermentation chambers. I am interested in opinions on ways to heat the carboy (cooling will just be done with some sort of refrigeration device). I am looking to build a two part cabinet with separate heating elements in each, with a separate...

    Carboy cover

I am going to build an insulated fermentation chamber that can raise the temperature of the carboys. I was going to use a low wattage incandescent bulb to heat the chamber. Usually I just cover my fermenters in a black trash bag in the basement, but it doesn't get much light so I don't care...

    Shelf life

Does anyone have any recommended Articles or sources on beer shelf life? I am curious about bottle vs keg, affect from beer styles, and warm bottle vs cold bottles. I noticed my bottled pale ale tastes like crap after sitting in the fridge for 4 months.

    HERMS heat problem

I tried to run HERMS system for the first time today. My setup is a 3 tiered stand, each with a burner. I use bayou classic stainless steel 15 gallon pots. I ran tubing from the mash to a chigger pump to a small copper cooling coil sitting in the hot water tun, and the outlet ran back into the...

    Boil kettle drain techniques

Draining to my fermenter is always low due to hop buildup. Any good techniques or equipment that helps with this issue? I use a bazooka filter. I haven't tried whirlpooling yet. I assume I just stir the hell out of the cooled wort. Does this work well for both pellets and whole hops...

    Unmalted grains

I am going to brew a wheat beer this weekend. I was planning on doing 40% 2 row, 40% malted wheat and 20% unmalted wheat. I was told that over 10% unmalted adjuncts need a cereal mash. Can I just do a protein rest at 110 for the entire mash for 30 minutes and then step to 150-152 and continue...

    pH measurements

Any recommendations on good pH readers? I hate strips, because I can never tell the color. I had a $60 digital one from the homebrew store but i dipped it too far into the mash and now I need a new one. Next time I will extract some mash into a cup and measure the pH from there.

    Fermentation temperature control

Does anyone know of any devices or have any methods to get varying fermentation temperatures? My basemen is typically about 65. My homebrew shop sells a band that maintains 73.
