    Super BREW Sunday

Brewed an amber, bottled an APA, transferred a barleywine and whipped up some JAOM. Hollered out "WHO DAT" a hundred times or so and then sang "When the Saints Go Marching In" at the top of my lungs...a lot. Exhausted today!!

Strain it or dump it all in??

Hello all, I have a question for those of you who are partial boiling, extract brewers (like myself). Ok, well anyone may reply :). When transferring the cooled wort to your primary fermentation vessel, do you strain out the hops and hot break or just dump it all in? I personally just dump...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Yep. One day after I "brewed" the apfelwein I came home to a smell which I thought must have been the result of the largest "log" in the litterbox known to mankind. 'Twas not the kitties. The smell even made them wrinkle their noses. Took a few days (and 2 glade plug-ins) to subside.

my first time using a wort chiller... was a disaster

My first 3 experiences with my IC were a nightmare too, so I feel for ya. I still have little scars on my fingers from gripping the threading bare-handed. And the hose that attaches from the sink to the chiller still leaks where it is clamped onto the copper (despite a metal clamp, a plastic...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Could someone recommend an amount of Splenda they used to backsweeten the Apfelwein? I have looked thru a lot of the posts, but am getting dizzy...there are so many!! I'd like to sweeten it just a little, not terribly much. But I dont even know where to start with amounts!! Thanks in advance-

    Full boil?

I brewed the same NB kit a few months ago. I did a partial boil and just chucked the hops in the boiling wort. No bag. Racked to secondary after a week(ish) and then dry hopped for a week. No bag. It turned out AWESOME!! Because of "no bag" you may want to tie a muslin bag or paint...

New to making yeast starter question

I promise I am not trying to take over this thread...just one quick question (I am a noobie). Why is it that airlocks for starters seem to be frowned upon by some homebrewers??

BeerSmith "boil volume based on equipment"

Hello All, I am a realtively new brewer, extracts and partial boil only at this point. I have a quick question with regards to the BeerSMith software. What is the difference between setting my boil volume based on equipment vs. setting batch size and boil volume? I have a 5 gallon pot, but I...

    put a cork in it!

Hello All, I am beginning to have quite a collection of Belgian bottles, and needless to say, a huge affinity for Belgian beer! I'd really like to use them for bottling an oatmeal stout that I have in my fermentation chamber but clearly I need larger caps...or corks. I have done a little...

what variety to dry hop with???

Hello All, I am about to order NB's Sinistral Warrior IPA, but would like to dry hop it. As a new brewer, I am really not able to distinguish the specific differences between all of the hop varieties...yet! Nor do I know which variety would be best for dry hopping when (in this case) the kit...

    Pump Recommendation for Wort Chiller

Hi All, I am a partial boiling, extract brewer, residing in the south. I have a wort chiller and it functions properly, but it's efficiency isnt as good as it should be because...I live in the south. The groundwater just isnt cool enough (yet, nor EVER in the summer months) to chill my wort...

    IPA on porter cake??

Hi All, A friend is about to brew a porter extract w/ steeping grains kit, which calls for US-05 dry yeast. She was thinking of brewing a Bell's Two Hearted clone shortly after and reusing the yeast by putting the IPA directly on the porter cake. The Two Hearted clone also calls for US-05...

    NOT another broken thermometer question!!

Hello All, I am still chuckling at my brewing blunder...I was just about to pitch the yeast into my freshly brewed & cooled oatmeal stout wort. With a pair of sanitized scissors I snipped off a tiny corner of the (sanitized) 1028 Wyeast smack pack. In what seemed like slow motion, I watched...

    Bells Two-Hearted Sub

I racked to secondary at day 8 when fermentation had slowed down considerably, but not completely stopped. I dry hopped in secondary for exactly one week. I bottled and then cracked one open after two weeks (the curiosity was killing me). It was soooo good at week two that I doubt I will let...

    Bells Two-Hearted Sub

I brewed the NB Three Hearted recently and cracked open a young bottle last pm. It was, and I am quoting someone else, "chock full of awesome!!". If you cant get Two Hearted, brew this clone!!

    keggle & cost efficiency

Hi All, I am currently doing partial boils, extract/steeping grains only. I would really like to start doing full 5 gallon boils, so I will need to upgrade my brew kettle. Now, I can get my hands on a sanke keg fairly easily, so would converting it to a keggle be the most cost efficient...
